can still get radioactivity on you even outside of a reactor. saw that happen at the pickering "a" nuclear power plant when doing a tour of it when i was in grade 13.
yeah, but there are plenty of precautions. the procedures employed are very safety conscious; i wear several radiation detecting badges and run through a variety of radiation monitors over a dozen times during my 6-hour shifts. i get less exposure there in a week than i do from drinking one beer.
