Well you see, most films that i am backing up on dvd tend to either stop halfway through or jump halfway through. I dont think it is the media and it doesnt happen to every film.

I am using winavi to encode and nero to burn
    any ideas?

Sounds like the media to me.Why dont you tell us what your using, so we can tell you if its the media or not.You should be using taiyo yuden, verbatim, ritek.
Try slowing down your burn speed.

If your using winavi, then you must have avi's your converting. Are you sure the jumping isnt on the avi itself?
    good luck

I,ve been having the same problem with,
    TDK Dvd-r 8x Media, so I tried
Verbatim Dvd-r 8x Media and the problem seemed to go away.
