Oh I thought you had the same memory as mine. My older memory overclocked much better. I'm kinda disappointed :(

    abuzar1,
Overclocking memory doesn't really change things that much to begin with. Many knowledgeable folks recommend running it as close to stock speed as possible at stock timings. I didn't get the chance to run the Tracer's at 1140 very long as my friend needed his memory back since he took it out of his rig so I could borrow it. We'll see! LOL!! I may well have to run it at 960MHz at 3.8GHz with the 2.0 multiplier if I want to run at stock or better settings. Even if I was to run it at 4.0GHz on the lowest multiplier it would only run at 1000MHz. With the 2.4 multi, it would have to run at 1200MHz. Some people claim that it will, and some claim that it won't. Either way, it will be plenty fast enough for me at 3.8GHz.

    Best Regards,
    Russ

Russ, the last batch I had was PC-6400 memory with stock timings of 5-5-5-15. I often ran it at more than 1000mhz with timings of 4-4-4-12.

If I had that memory I would be doing 4Ghz on this easy. With timings of 4-4-4-12, that's not shabby!

Yo guys, im kinda in my eyes making an intelligent decision for future, im just gonna stick in a reasonably good c2d cpu and overclock it to say 3ghz and wait to see what happens to the quads later on in the year.

    I was thinking this,

    http://www.scan.co.uk/Products/ProductInfo.asp?WebProductID=632053

Is there any other c2d that will reach the same level at overclock?

I am not sure how much performance the 1333fsb chips has over say the 1066/800fsb c2d chips.

You could probably take that to 3500Mhz with good RAM. The E6750 goes all the up to 4Ghz if you have good enough RAM...

but with the E6750 being ONLY £10 more, id get that tbh.

    He_Man,
That would be a good choice. Anything less and you lose the extra 2MB of L2 cache, which really makes a difference in 3DMark. Stay with the 1066 memory and you will have no difficulty getting well over 3.0GHz with ease. Just bear in mind that the CPU multiplier is 7, not 8 like the E6750, so the fsb has to be higher for the same performance. 3.2GHz would put you right in the memory's ballpark at 1097MHz using the 2.4 memory multiplier, and it should run fine there depending on what motherboard you choose.

    Beat Regards,
    Russ

It doesn't look too overclock friendly with timings that high at 800Mhz. Cant you get better RAM? The Max you could do if the thing didn't overclock at all would be 2.8Ghz. Because at 400FSB and 7x multiplier you would get 2.8ghz. At 400FSB and setting the memory multiplier to the lowest 2.00 you are looking at 800mhz, or in other words PC-6400 memory. Although if you can get your memory to 920 Mhz that would give you the 3.22Ghz. Just set your FSB to 460.

That is of course if you cant overclock the RAM at all. If you can you get the the CPU speed higher.

EDIT: Russ he is using PC-6400 with timings of 5-5-5-12! I don't think Cas5 PC-6400 ram would be very overclock friendly. If that E6550 has a 7X multiplier that screwsup my math! I have to change it now.

    One in your sig. ;)

    Abuzar,

..........i thought the corsair ram was the best 800mhz in the buisness and 4-4-4-12 timings were good..............

We are looking at the same corsair xms2?

    abuzar1,
That's why I suggested going with the 1066 ram. At 3.5GHz, if it will run a 2000 fsb, would put 1066 memory at 1000MHz with the 2.0 memory multiplier. You could loosen the timings a bit and see if it would run on the 2.4 multi and then it would run at 1200MHz. I think the 1000MHz with tighter timings would be better!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

Well I wouldn't say... best. In my opinion that goes to Crucial.

Anyway about your memory, the timings on Newegg were 5-5-5-12. I just checked and corsair says that the timings are 5-5-5-18, but are tested running at 4-4-4-12. So I'm assuming that 920Mhz would be a reasonable expected overclock from it. Yeah you could do 3.22Ghz with that. If it's as good as my ram you can expect 3360 Mhz from it at 4-4-4-12.

    He_Man,
The 800MHz memory is going to hold you back with the lowest 2.0 multiplier. 3.0GHz would put the memory at about 857MHz, 3.2GHz would put it at about 915MHz, 3.4GHz would be about 970MHz if it will run at any of those speeds. Remember the chip is 1333. I'm sorry now that I didn't get 1066 memory to begin with but I just didn't do the math! LOL!! My G.Skill just can't handle the higher fsb! It will run as high as 960 with no problem with an 800 CPU but not the 1333! Conclusion! It's got to be the higher fsb giving me the problem since it runs fine at 4.0 with the Tracers!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

    Lp531,
How do you figure no raid on the DS3P? Gigabyte lists raid for it on their spec page, and it's in the manual???

I just checked, newegg lists raid as one of the features. It also has a extra PCI-E slot. What can I use that for? Crossfire?

I did not see it listed on IT's site...as having Raid...
I didn't check gigabytes...so the only difference is...DDR3 on one...and Heat Pipes and a second PCIEx16 on the other...

    Yes it is Crossfire supported...

    abuzar1,
Not quite so fast! I quite agree that with the right fsb speed you can hit 1000 with your ram and your CPU at those timings but you have to take into account the lower CPU multiplier (7) of the E6550. My present ram had no problem hitting 940MHz at stock timings of 4-4-4-12 on a 1504 fsb with the 9x multiplier of the E4300. It won't do that with the fsb going 1762MHz with the E6750. I have to run 5-4-4-12 timings like I do now! 3.8GHz would mean 950MHz at the lowest multiplier with the fsb running 475/1900. It just won't run, it won't even post until the bios resets. The Crucial ballistix Tracer 1066 memory will run at 475/1900. That tells me that the problem is that the memory doesn't agree with the higher FSB very much as everything else is equal, since I've already run the memory at 940 before, with the 9x multiplier of the E4300 on the same motherboard at a 376/1504 fsb!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

Yeah but who is talking about the E6550? I was just saying if I had my older RAM I could do 4Ghz because my RAM did excess of 1000Mhz at 4-4-4-12. So if I can do 500FSB and set the memory multiplier to 2.00 I can get my memory to 1ghz and get 4Ghz from my cpu!

    abuzar,
We were originally discussing He_Man's options and he was going to get an E6550, which is were this whole thing started in the first place! Then it just sort of fell apart!

The whole point I was trying to make for He_Man's benefit was that you had 800MHz memory that would run at 1000MHz and I had 800MHz memory that wouldn't with the higher fsb required, and the fact that he had even less chance because of the 7x multiplier of the E6550! To add to the confusion, you thought that he_Man's memory was 5-5-5-15, when it was actually 4-4-4-12. It just all sort of unraveled from there! ROFLMAO!!

Some how we got two different conversations mixed up! LOL!!

    Best Regards,
    Russ
