Also I'm expecting more than 11k. I mentioned this before, ATI cards do very well in 3DMark.

Really? I actually couldn't find anyone on 3dmark with more than 10,200 with the card. On an E6550 at 2.33Ghz, somebody posted a score of around 8500. Not exactly worlds apart from my existing score. My extra 860mhz CPU clock may help boost my score, but I'm envisaging I may have to OC the GPU too to get above 10k. Would be disappointing if I had to do so though... Not that I care about 3dmark much. 2560x1600 fluid gaming is what I'm after!

What sort of score does your 3850 pull at 3.2Ghz CPU speed? I know roughly where to aim for then...

I'll redownload 3dmakr and tell you but I think I have gotten 11k on my 3850 so it should be easy on the 3870.

Haha yeah, but with a "proper" Core 2 Duo.
Should be able to climb some ranks on my LAN party's 3dmark leaderboard though!
Interestingly enough it looks like the Sapphire 3870 comes with the full version, which is nice.
Let's see, currently ahead of me is an SLI experiment from a while back at 8500, an E6600/8800GTX at stock and an X2 4600+ with an 8800GTS 512MB, both sitting at the 9200 or so mark.
Above that I've got a 3.4Ghz E6400 and 8800GTS at 10771, would be nice to beat that. Then there are two 11,300 scores to beat (both core 2s at around 3Ghz with 8800GTSs). If I can get above 11295 I'm in the top five lol.
Beyond that point I think it's a lost cause hehe - 3.4Ghz+ and a pair of quad cores, all with GTXes or the G92 GTS.

Lol not that great really... I just play to have fun, I never really win anything. Except the occasional UT2004 instagib match, and that's a conditional that a certain couple of players aren't in the match, or I'll get severely owned. Looking forward to 2560x1600 COD4 though... :)

Hey check this out. It's a review of a 8800GT card. They test the card with a Phenom 9600 and a Q6600. It seems the Intel outperforms but then the Phenom does better than the Intel! Interesting...

    http://www.overclockersclub.com/reviews/palit_8800gt/6.htm

Of course the Intel ouperforms 95% of them time. Chec out this Graph, the blue on the Left is AMD and orange is the Q6600.

EDIT: You guys remember when I said the 256MB 8800GT sucks? Well let me re-enforce that statement.

so by that logic, 512MB card + Intel CPU = win?

I personally have gotten used to Nero I edit the MPG from my Sony SR40 Handycam and turn it into DVD's for the rest of my band to watch our live performances. Only problem is you need a system with your power (problem for others, not you) to edit HD content without transcoding it to MPG first thus losing quality automatically.
I've also used Sony Vegas http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/products/vegasfamily.asp and Ulead http://www.ulead.com/vs/ before but for ease and simplicity have gone back to Nero.
Theres also the the granddaddy of them all from Adobe, something in their creative suite series http://www.adobe.com/products/creativesuite/?ogn=EN_US-gntray_prod_creative_suite_family_home

EDIT---Those are just Windows programs, if you say you are going to run a Mac OS, maybe lurk in their forums for mac was always billed as better at audio/video editing than Windows solutions.

I've got a funny feeling i can push my quad to about 3.4ghz +. I wanna try and break 13,000 in 3dMark.

One of the guys at my LAN posted this score.
    Q6600@3.0Ghz, 8800GTS 640MB: 13,631
I don't know if the 8800GTS 640MB benches higher than the 3870 or not, but an extra 400mhz on your quad core should bag you at least another 500 marks I'd reckon.
When my 3870 arrives, i will shortly post its score here. I'll see if I can get the best score for a CPU/Mobo/RAM/GPU combination that cost less than £400!

    Greg16,

you should be able to get 3.4ghz out of a Q6600 but that is about their limit.

    abuzar,

what kind of video editing are you wanting to do? for dvd's I use DvdRemake Pro. I remove the previews, adverts, warning screens, and special features I don't want. it will do a lot more though, especially the pro version.

Maybe the extra 128mb does make a difference?

I'll see if i can increase my GPU speeds up abit more but my clocks i used seem optimised and any higher will give me a "failed" message.
Should i empahise more on GPU clock or frequency?

The shitty CRT screen is back on the old shitty P4 machine so im stuck with my lappie for ahwile.

Ugh, buy a proper monitor damn it! :)
As for the overclocks, I'd say wait until there's a build of ATitool that supports the card or use rivatuner. I should be in the same boat come tuesday, so I'll be able to offer some first-hand experience...

I honestly don't even have any idea yet. Basic stuff probably.

I'll go ahead and Download the Adobe thing. About the Mac thing, I fully expect it to be horrible so I'm not going to get some programs for it.

Well, a Q6700@3.85 and a 3870 using a small overclock (stock cooler) apparently pulled 13700 marks. How much different do you think that CPU is to mine in terms of 3dmarks? 2000?
