yeah thats more like it being its almost 23 inch tall

and your the most of the reason abuzar(thanks for talking/pushing me into getting it) that the Q9450 is going in (it is the better choice)instead of the E8400 lol

What Morty said!!!! GEEZ you've been teasing us for weeks now... hehehe. :p

    @RedRob,
Glad you got everything going the way you want it. ;) Well at least fully functional... hehehe. :p You got an extra $200 or so lying around?? I wanna try that mobo Soph has been talking about (P5Q P45 ASUS?). :D Sounds like a good 'un for NOT so much money. :D Compared to the ASUS top/upper end mobos that is. :)

i have heard that its a great clocker esp for the price. looks very nice, as ukually the normal boards from asus are yellow, but the onyl problem i have with it is the 24 pin mobo connector is ont he whole other side, behind the I/O port.

I thought everyone was waiting to see if I blew mine up yet and since I've been steady OC'd for a while now it is deemed "safe" LOL.

    bigwill68,
Nah! It just won't clock that high and be stable. It will boot up as high as 3.8GHz, but stability is an issue over 3.55GHz. It seems it's the limit of the chip. All three motherboards it's been in seem to have the same limits. It's been in a 965P-DS3, my DS3R and a Striker extreme and different kinds of memory was tried as well. All 3 take around 1.40v to do that! Hopefully, when I get it replaced, the new one will OC a little better.

    Best Regards,
    Russ

    {quote]Striker extreme[/quote]

I've read many mixed reviews about the Striker Extreme because it was on my list of choices. I had hoped that someone among the overclock crowd would get one and test for its true mettle, but it never happened. It was during my search that I tripped across a couple of reviews of the P5Q Deluxe. Trust me the notion of saving over $200 brought the 6402 out of me. I figure this is the last dual core build that I will probably ever do for myself so why go to extremes when Nehalem is scheduled to be released soon. Please note that this not an attempt to dissuade anyone who is looking at the board because I'm still interested in its oucome.;)

lol, to be fair - the Q9450 is vastly superior to the E8400 if you're into your encodes and what not - not a cheap CPU though by any means.
Russ: I wouldn't worry about the striker, but remember my old P35C-DS3R? My friend that I sold it to has an E6600 in it that's currently clocked at 3.6Ghz, stable. I would wager the E6750 as typically being a better overclocker, wouldn't you? It's luck of the draw, his first E6600 wouldn't go above 3.2...

The E6750 is really just an E6700 with an updated FSB 1333 and a lower clock multiplier to get it to the same speed as the E6700. They otherwise both have the same core. The problem here is that if you took an E6700 increased its front side bus to 1333 it will be clocked higher than the E6750.

Since the E6700 has a rated bus speed of 266.66 with a multipler of 10 that brings it to its speed of 2.66 GHz, but change the bus speed to the same as the E6750 it would equal 333.33 times 10 or about 3.3 GHz. So as you can see it is faster at the same bus speed as the E6750. Since they are both on a 65 nm core the E6700 has an advantage.

    shaffaaf,
That location has always worked out well for me. I run the PS cable under and around the outside of the case fan and it plugs right in. Very neat too!

    bigwill68,
It's the good one, Box with the G0 stepping!

    Sophocles,
Someone here has an Asus Striker Extreme, not the Extreme II which at the moment is problematical, but the Extreme! They had no problems overclocking it! I'll try to remember who it is!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

there's not much mention about the E8500 here will it stand up to the Q9450 even tho it has two less cores all around temp wise also..i guess it depends on the board also and how your keep'in it cool..right now at the egg they got the E8500 oem at $229.99 free shipping reg price $269.99 retail they try'in to charge you $40.00 bucks extra for a stock cooler and a pretty box it comes in..lol the Q9450 newegg price $329.99 Micro center cost on sale $299.99 but..i believe after tax it will be 329 and some changes..I'm goin with 1 of the 2 on my nexts build..have'n made up my mind up yet..but..i know the board will be an asus..

QUAD no questions asked for the GM!!! And it seems an ASUS convert in the making. :) Morty you hear that?? hehehe. ;P I'm still looking hard at the DFI mobos. :D BUT with the "blessing" of Soph on the P5Q it seems the mid end ASUS mobos are looking better, maybe I should say mobo. lol. ;)

You know of course I already have a Q6600 (B3 stepping) and the E6850, what do I need another build for?? ROFL.... Told the wifey yesterday I was getting the itch for another build... Also told her I would NOT do anything til 2009!!! :-(

    bigwill68,
You do get a bit more than a stock cooler and a pretty box, like a longer warranty, 3 times longer! Box is 3 years, OEM is 1!

Zoso, and a ood thing I convinced you to get a Quad core too. They are great! I just convinced someone else to get a Q6600 from a E8400.

regarding the ATX connector, It's a pain for when you use a large heatsink because there's not much room to work, and it's also a pain if you use a large or custom graphics cooler (such as the Powercolor SCS or Thermalright HR-03 in top-over configuration) as it often won't fit. There's no reason for the ATX connector to be anywhere other than where it always is.
regarding the striker, Indeed they do, but the only people I know to have had strikers binned them for being impossible to overclock with. One of them chose an EVGA 680i (now defunct) and the other chose a P35C-DS3R, and has since overclocked his E6850 quite handily.

In the UK everywhere I look, the retail CPU is cheaper than the OEM, what's that about?

Hi all, I've decided im really in need of a PC because my current one is well a POS >_> Anyway, about a year ago I was looking into building a PC for my self but, needless to say, the parts I was thinking about are all outdated now...So, with that in mind I've started looking at newer parts and have come up with a few selections. I've always liked afterdawn and everynow and then i try to take some time to browse through it, though i havent really gotten a chance lately. That being said, I respect any opinions given and would really appreciate some suggestions on my build. Keep in mind the goal is to spend ~$1000 though I could probably go as high as 1200 or 1300.

    My selections so far:

    $170 CPU-AMD Phenom 9600 Agena 2.3 ghz Quadcore

$??? PSU-no idea what would be good here... any suggestions? x.x

~$30 DVD/CD RW-not sure whats a good brand here. suggestions please?

    ~$15 DVD/CD-see above

So, yeah. Thats what i have so far. Ive only spent a couple hours researching it though. Like I said ive been out of the computer scene for quite some time now so im not all that update on whats good and such. Oh, and for those wondering, the PC will be used as a media PC and for light-medium gaming and will most likely run Windows XP because I dont feel like buying Vista. x.x

Once again, any and all comments greatly appreciated. Will check back soon. Thanks.

Are you dead set on AMD? We don't see many AMD builds here as of late so it might be nice to see a nice AMD vs. Intell quad comparison here locally when you get it all buttoned up.

For the PSU there are a lot who will recommend the Corsair HX series modular PSU's and since I own one I'll give it a nod as well.

For DVD RW's I would suggest one of the following

    Pioneer 215D SATA $30 + $9 shipping
    Pioneer 115D (IDE) $32 + $9 shipping.
    NEC/Optiarc 7200S (SATA) $24 free shipping
    NEC/Optiarc 7200A (IDE) $25 + $9 shipping

Samsung 203B is a strong contender as are a lot of the Lite-On models. I would personally go with a SATA drive, but some still still swear by PATA. I think both can be equally good.

If you are willing to spare an inch on the monitor OfficeDepot has a 19" Acer for $149.
