Ah but the in-stock versions are about 270! That's a bit over my budget. Even before I was cutting it really close.

Then save up a bit longer, it's worth doing. The 3850 can't hold a candle to the 3870, not even when overclocked.

Well I think I will just get the 3850 for now and sell it later and buy the 3750 when the price is lower.

You know me, I'll probably end up making a profit out of it.

Then you don't know ebay, GTR.
I've done what Abuzar does once, bought an X800GTO on a this week only special for £68 delivered, and sold it on ebay for £95, with an at-cost postage price. (This was a while ago) Trouble is, the ebay and paypal selling fees meant that we only made a profit of £12. Not bad for one card, but we'd have to have done it a lot to make good money from it.

I'm willing to bet a substantial amount of money that your hard drive isn't messed up. It's something else causing the problem. The hard drive powering down is a feature built into windows so that when you get a blue screen, the hard disk is shut off to prevent any bad data being written that could damage your windows install. I certainly believe the problem stems from RAM, the motherboard, or some dodgy drivers.

Then do it! You can keep your graphics card, replacing the rest doesn't need to be at all expensive. I know prices are somewhat elevated where you live but even so, it shouldn't be too hard to make a decent value build. You can get something like an E4400 with a basic Gigabyte P35 board, an OCZ Stealthxstream or Thermaltake purepower PSU would suffice. In the US that's barely more than $250. RAM's dirt cheap too, even for 2GB of DDR2. I reckon you could get a decent PC including the case made from your old parts for no more than $350 in the US. What would that work out for you?

Yeah, keep the 8600GTS. It's still a good card.

A good system can be built around your video card for el cheapo :)

Good is of course, relative, but it will suffice for any modern game.

@sammorris ok lets see how much it would cost me for the components you mentioned...

    E4400 - R1,280.00
    Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L IP35 Motherboard - R1,253.00
    OCZ StealthXStream - R990.00

    total R3523 = $525

i've got 2gb of A-DATA cheap ram so it's not included...

this is the rig i'm planning to get...

    Phenom X4 9700(9900 is not out yet) - R3009
Gigabyte 790FX chipset mobo - about R2000 or more
    OCZ StealthXStream - R990.00
    Corsair DDR2-800 4GB (2x2GB) XMS2 Twin2X Memory Module Kit - R3,040.00
    Gecube HD3870 512MB - R2200
    Antec 900 - R1238

    these are the important ones...

    Total:R10997 = $1691

Hardly budget-conscious if you ask me, anything that works out well above $1000 is starting to head towards the 'dream' category. Besides, you're spending a lot of money to get a Phenom there. Are you sure it's worth it?

indeed that is my "Dream" pc...

i was thinking i should buy a AM2/AM2+ mobo and a X2 cpu for now...later on when i do need quad core technology i'll upgrade it to X4...then it should be cheaper...

    AMD Athlon64 X2 5000+ Black edition
Gigabyte 790FX mobo...for ATI gpu...what happens if i change my mind and bought a nvidia gpu instead of ati?...790FX chipset will be no use...
and the rest stays the same...

Or what if you bought a P35 chipset board, stuck a cheap Core 2 Duo in it for now, then get a Penryn later?
That makes more sense, as a Core 2 is faster than an X2 now, and a Penryn will be faster than a Phenom... seems like a no brainer to me, especially when relatively inexpensive P35 boards support the new CPUs.
As for the GPU, you can use any type of graphics card with any type of chipset, you just obviously can't use SLI without an nvidia chipset.

Then don't be, the vast majority of the time fanboyism earns you inferior products at higher prices.
