While 3DMark06 may not be entirely fair, it does give a good indication of what you might expect from the latest modern games.

I've seen a 9600GT with an X2 5000+ @ 3GHz bench about 9850 at default settings. That should be a fair match in performance. Let's see how your laptop stacks up to a similar spec desktop system.

that's interesting, as I would place the HD3870 as a near identical performer to the 9600, and with my 3.15Ghz E4300, I scored 10,800 with that.

Probably due to the faster CPU.

Well exactly, but nvidia typically score higher in 3dmark, so that's quite a big jump in CPU performance between them. Consider the 70 dollar E2180 is that CPU's equivalent, that's not bad (yes, it's 2Ghz vs 1.8, but it had less cache)

    Yes. With a 3GHz+ Core 2 Duo, a 9600GT might get 10,500 or so.

I'll get 3Dmark06 and see how I measure up.

It will be around the 5000 mark beacuse the 9600M GT is roughly the equivalent of a desktop 9500 card.

    We'll see

As far as I am aware, the HD4850 fits fine in most mid tower cases. My 8800GTS is of similar size and and fit well into a standard ATX Raidmax Smilodon.

It's per-case though. The layout might prevent it. The only real way to know is to try.

Yes, the HD4850 is standard length, it will fit in any normal size case.

Woah. Is it just on my end, or did Youtube suddenly go widescreen?

Yes, widescreen moved to widescreen format today.

Doesn't help it any though. Now it's just black bars on the side and is it just me or are the videos even crappier quality?

it's black bars either side because the existing videos have not been converted. I haven't noticed any drop in quality.

Yeah, it seems generally the same. None of the videos have really been affected. It's nice to fullscreen a widescreen video and get proper formatting though. The whole reason I went widescreen was to get rid of the black bars on the top and bottom. I couldn't care less about bars on the side. That just means my monitor is capable of a better image than that video can produce :D

    Oh, you bet ;P

High res widescreens are just about the best part of PCs. Sure, you can have a widescreen HD TV, but the image quality is *puke* compared to something like Sam's or my monitor. You have to sit far away or the image is pixellated and generally crappy looking. With monitors you get infinitely higher pixel density so you can stick your face right up to it and bask in the fine details :D
