I'm sure we can come to an agreement... haha

I caved on the 4870X2 deal. My first email was 'sorry, unless you can wait six weeks until I get my loan, I'll have to say no' - 5 minutes and some thinking later I added 'I'll ask around and see if any of my mates want the card' - 5 more minutes and some more thinking later I added - 'screw it, I'll buy it, I have a job now, I'll either find a buyer or use it myself'.

Who am I to refuse a hundred quid off a 4870X2? Now of course I'd love to whack it in my existing PC but I'd need a much bigger PSU. I'd also love to 3dmark the 4870X2 but for that to be worth it I'd need a quad core CPU. This is all, 'wow, what I'd do when I get some money' and the offer of this 4870X2 has rushed it too quickly for me. I'll see what I can do, I don't want either my 4870 or this 4870X2 sitting on a shelf losing money for any period of time, nor do I want to fork out extra on a big time PSU and CPU and have a crazy loud PC. Decisions, decisions. Hell, I don't even know if the 4870X2 will fit the Lexa. It'll probably be a tight squeeze.

sell me the 4870 then :D

looks liek i got the RMA too soon. the 4850 is meant to be sent tomorow. i had replaced ALL but my mobo and it wouldnt go above 20FPS. so right now i checked on my old PC with P4 3.06Ghz and 2GB of DDR1 at 200MHz.

at 1920 all low a solid 90 FPS, which before on my 3.4GHZ E2140 and 4GB of Geil 1193MHz (IICR) RAM was going about 20FPS. RMA to my mobo should sort that :)

So it's your mobo not your GPU? Hmm, that's the second case of poor frame rate due to a motherboard I've seen today. Both Asus - nope, no snide remark here.

If you want my HD4870 that can easily be arranged. However, I will have to run-in the 4870X2 first to make sure it's happy with my existing system, so the earliest it'll be sent off will probably be the beginning of next week. It will hurt but I can't Crossfire the X2 and the solo card without a major infrastructure change, and to be frank, I'm not even sure it's necessary, especially when you consider that 4870X3 is vulnerable to the 4870's own limitations with memory, to which the standalone 4870X2 isn't - of course this is all irrelevant if you don't use 2560x1600.

    mm yeah :(

oh well its been an amazing board and to think i took my E2140 from 1.6 to 3.4 with a tad over 1.38on the Vcore....amazing!

and RMA to that, and i might sell the RMA for a P45 P5Q PRO.

PM the details, or MSN me :D

also ironically the crap P915 chipset mobo that my P4 is on is an asus aswell :D

Well Sam, now that you'll be stepping up to the 4870x2 (that was fast!) it would be fun to see some more Crysis numbers.

On your "does anybody have a fortune to spend?" I didn't see Crysis at 2560x1600. But now with the 4870x2, we should see some good crysis fps data at that resolution, right? Congrats again - and more power to you shaff for nabbing Sam's single 4870!

I had to request the 2560 crysis numbers, they weren't in the article. They are as follows:

You have to remember of course that Crossfire X doesn't really work in Crysis with four GPUs yet, so the result with two 4870X2s is about the same as with one - namely the one I should be trying out soon. The GTX280 triple SLi combo is unstoppable though, maxing out Crysis at that res in DX10 with no trouble whatsoever, still no AA though, but in Crysis, I don't consider it necessary.

I spent ~$3000 on my comp, bit much, but I'm glad I did...as I will have a sick setup for quite sometime...with continued updates.

I am a fanboy of my local store, memory express. Almost always cheaper than newegg (and in Canadian prices!), but I have ordered from NCIX, and have an account on tiger direct.

I will have to download 3dmark06 off filehippo.

    Edit:
I play crysis with one GTX280 just fine...

Nope I think its 1650xsomething, one down from the max I do believe.
Shaders are on full though and not medium. I don't have any program that measures frame rates though, so I couldn't tell you how good it is, but it plays without problems.

GTX280 clocked to 677 core clock, upped the shader clock and others too but can't recall what they are at again.
    Q6600 at 3.4
Patriot Viper DDR3 clocked up a bit at 1620 with 7-7-7-20-1T
    790i
Vista x64 SP1 with blackviper tweaks

Yeah I actually didn't price it out though, as I bought it overtime and some things were considered sunk costs. I bought my case/power supplies/hard drive/monitor/keyboard n shit first. Then I got the MB, Ram, Processor, and last the graphics card.

    My full system is:
CM Stacker 830 Case (Black) ~350
    Thermaltake 1200W modular ~350
    20in Syncmaster ~200
Microsoft Basic Keyboard n mouse ~20
    Some portable speakers 2.0 free
    XFX 790i ~350
    Q6600 ~250
    Viper DDR3 ~450 (yikes~!)
eVGA GTX 280 ~650 (first day out haha, never got my rebate)
    Hitachi 750GB ~150 as my main drive, OS's Vistax64, XPx86, and Ubuntu x64
    New additions:
    Spinpoint 1TB ~150
    Dlink Wireless Extreme N PCI-E adapt ~100

umm that comes to very roughly ~ $3020

Well you overpaid a LOT on the Case, PSU, GFX Card, Motherboard, and memory.

I disagree, as I am more than satisfied with my computer and feel it is worth 3g's when you see everything it can do...which is everything.
I also bought lots of the components when they first came out.
I actually just checked out prices again, and I didn't overpay *at the time* on anything...maybe the case.

Hell, the 1200W PS is still $360 CDN
    the case is $100 less,
but both of those a pretty damn near future proof.

You can disagree all you want, but the fact remains you over paid. You don't need a 1200W PSU, and that case isn't worth more than 180 dollars. I suppose case is personal preference but still.

You could have gotten TWO 4870s for the price of one GTX280 and for 300 dollars you could have gotten a MUCH better X48 motherboard. DDR3 at the moment offers no real performance gains, I believe.

    Nope.
How do you know I wont need a 1200W PSU? You don't...you have no idea, especially considering that Graphics cards are using more power.

Yes, at $650 I overpaid, and I misse dmy $150 rebate....~400 two 4870s you say?

790i requires DDR3, and I bought for the future (next couple o' years).
Why is the X48 a better MB? Cause I sure as hell don't have problems OCing mine.

The case is $250 right now, I just looked. I pay Canadian prices.

Some people have to support the R and D of companies as well, and I am one of those people.

You can't assume everyone has the same views and values as yourself.

1680x1050, that's about six or seven down from the max, generally considered to be the standard resolution these days. Even my HD3870 did alright in Crysis at that resolution. You also bought a RIDICULOUS power supply.

three GTX280s and an overclocked quad core CPU use around 670W, so 1200? Please, there's no defending going above 1KW.
