    PM - you mean evening?
    So you already tried that?

Boozer, have you ever heard of "Play hard to get." We human beings, being rather complicated, sometimes don't want what we can easily have, and we DO want what we can't have. You have your eye on this one particular girl - but to get her, it might be better if you kind of put that idea on the back shelf, and moved toward increased girl popularity in general. The result could be that eventually she would see you as somebody who "doesn't need" her, you have all these other girls who like you, which might cause her to start pursuing you - which is what you wanted all along.

Do you already have a boat club?

Good thing I'm here to save the thread :p

Just an update, I got half-life 2 to run at 1280x800 all i had to do was change the screen ratio to widescreen ,and suddenly my res. was there under resolution
It looks great, now i just have to run it and see performance

    Back on topic ;)

You're kidding. I thought that button was exclusively for reporting Shaff. :D

Hey all this time I thought the side fan on the tempest was exhaust - because it doesn't have a filter. One reviewer complained about the lack of filter in that location - and I figured - well, it's probably an exhaust fan, the idiot! Just shows you who the idiot was!

Sam - when did I ever say I didn't think airflow was important? You're mixing me up with some other Rich :p

So now, I'm thinking that I should turn my side exhaust into an intake - I have a small dedicated intake on the side that goes through a tube straight to the hfs, and besides that right now my only main intake is the kama bay which I just realized has been stuck, not spinning, for these many weeks. (I only use that computer for gaming on Wednesdays.)

The quote above talks about balanced airflow - I think I am way out of balance with 2 inlets: one kama bay 120mm 1600 scythe inlet, one hsf 80mm inlet, and 5 exhausts: one 120mm 800rpm scythe side exhaust, blitztorm card turbine rear exhaust, 80mm 1200 rpm (loud) rear exhaust, gpu rear exhaust, and 80mm semi-loud psu rear exhaust. If I turned the side exhaust into an inlet, I suppose I could pick up filter material for it, and in that case maybe a small top exhaust fan would make more sense. What say you Sam?

Hey booze - the PM thing - how does one know they have a private message (through the email?) And how does one go to a private message?

Hey I'm going to definitely turn that side exhaust fan around - what material makes a good temporary fan filter - anybody know?

Hey Ray, thanks for the tip - the email that I have assigned to this forum is one I almost never check - maybe I better change it. I'll try the other edit my account method.

Wow, good thing I saved some of my packing foam - I found a piece of packing foam about a quarter inch thick - maybe I can slice it thinner with a razor blade.

It is almost impossible to slice packing foam thin with a razor blade or very sharp knife - but almost possible with a pair of scissors, and the patience of a saint LOL

Better yet, after an hour of slicing - I figured out the right thing to google, and using "case fan filter" I ordered a 120mm fan filter for $6.76 with shipping. Duhhhhh!

All you guys would be proud. What do you think Sam?

I turned around the side exhaust, and now it's a side inlet. The filter is on the way. My final design will be 3 inlets and 4 exhausts. For the side inlet fan, (I'm moving the 800 rpm 120mm scythe to the top) I found a 1600 scythe S-flex at Frozen CPU for $15, $5 less than Newegg!!

I went to Frozen CPU to pick up a 120mm grill like the last one I bought from them for the side fan. So I'll have two quiet-but-powerful 1600rpm 120mm inlet fans rated at about 60cfm each, a small 80mm hsf auto inlet fan, and then an 800 rpm scythe 120mm top exhaust, psu 80mm back exhaust, regular back 80mm exhaust, and blitztorm turbine card back exhaust. The 3850 I get, the Sapphire, won't exhaust out the back. The blitztorm can be turned down all the way to mild, otherwise it is NOISY, and the high-speed back 80mm is also NOISY - but I have a quiet one I could replace it with.

I could make the whole rig quieter that way - but first I want to see how cool everything runs. I don't really care since I game with headphones. My rational on beefing the side inlet from 800 to 1600rpm is that I want a lot of air flow coming in right there on the gpu.

What do you think Sam? It's no Tempest, but it's probably going to be a fairly balanced air-flow, which will let me get away with saving $60 on a sapphire 3850 dumping the hot air inside the case (instead of the HIS more elegant rear-exhaust card.) I'll end up keeping this gaming rig around as a spare for the next five years, even after the new build, the way estuansis does.

What I did just now cost about $40 - it doesn't really make a lot of sense - I could have just bought the more elegant rear-exhaust 3850. But the idea of top exhaust has me intrigued, so one more final mod, some drilling and hack sawing on the top of the case (the grill will hide my mistakes) and better air-flow!!

I HAVE TO BLAME ALL YOU GUYS HERE for talking about cases so much :D Interestingly enough, Mo, my computer shop buddy, had built me another P4, 3 or 4 years ago, a cream case with a green plastic see-through bit of iMac-style adornment on the front. I use the "green" computer as my daily workhorse running my real estate - I'm using it right now to write this post. It's a 2.8ghz - I got that a few months before he built me the 3.2ghz, 533 buss, x850xtpe gaming rig. But the "green" case always had a top exhaust baffle which I ignored, until GTR started talking about the HAF and Ray and Shaff and Sam and Boozer and Cincy and Estuansis and everybody started debating cases.

That "green" computer has been giving me problems, and I opened up the case and ended up throwing out the bad 9800 graphics card - I have an on-board mobo Rage graphics chip I am plugging into temporarily.

While I was doing that I installed an 80mm exhaust fan on the pre-drilled holes on the top of that case. It doesn't need the cooling help now, but it will get the rear-exhaust x850xtpe I'm going to pull from my gaming rig when the 3850 finally shows up - maybe within the next two weeks since an escrow is about to close. So all these years my slower p4 had a top exhaust grate - but nothing at all on the "better" faster gaming rig case. He had moved to a different case manufacturer - with no top-of-case air-flow grate. In my complete ignorance, I never noticed the change - UNTIL NOW!

(On next year's new build - all the graphics cards will be rear-exhaust. I'll be checking a lot with Sam and going for a quieter design as well - all 120mm or larger fans - probably the Tempest, or maybe the HAF depending on price. I'll probably game still with headphones, but estuansis - you got me all excited about carrying the PC in and powering up the HDTV. I might do that one day. Lol)

On the subject of Fallout 3. Well, you can tell Bethesda made it. I only played for 15mins so far(no time for now, school tomorrow), but what I have played is VERY Oblivion like.

Overall I like the game so far. The graphics are good and Oblivion was good. This is basically a post-apocalyptic Oblivion. I'll keep you guys updated.

    game comes out Oct 28!!
