i started playing fallout 3 yesterday and it is awesome. the graphics are very good. i can run at ultra settings with no aa or af at 1920x1200 with about 40fps in an outside environment. the beginning of the game took a while but it once i got out of vault 101 the game got alot better. have any of you guys tried it yet?

lol It's my thread. I could always change the title hahaha.

Honestly, I do like Fallout 3 a lot. Have you noticed how everyone looks ugly though? The graphics are good but the character models are just ugly.

The beginning IS boring, but outside it's funner. It feel a LOT like oblivion. Each character also speaks volumes. I don't mind that, others might.

i like how it feels like oblivion. even though the characters look ugly they are alot better than oblivion. the characters are animated alot better and it looks more realistic when talking and moving.

I'll see if I can find the sacred "hand-glider" once I start playing.

All you guys have got me really amped for dead space.
    Can't wait to play it

I thought Doom 3 was scary when I played it a few years back, can't wait to play this.

Yeah, Crossfire is really nice :p

I like maxing everything I have at native res. It rocks!

Hey Ray - you're always here, that's good. Since it's HIS thread, should we let boozer change the name to "the official xbox thread" Hahahahahaha!

Shaff - a new 4870x2 Whoooooooooooooo! Yeah, maybe that's what I'll do and skip the crossfire (could later go crossfire with two of those beasts if everybody starts taking advantage of 4 gpus - might be able to max out crysis then at 2560x1600.)

Hey Sam, if you pick up another 4870x2, have they fixed crysis - will it take advantage of the 4 cores at 2560x1600??

My rig is down. The 3850 arrived before the power supply and I stuck it in - just to see. I felt lucky. Screen jitters 30 seconds after xp signin, and then the system reboots. (Corsair 450 33 amps on 12 volt rail is on the way.) I informed Mo - he conceded the point. He's learning. Me, I'll never learn. I could have blown something - but my luck is holding out. lol

You guys with your scary games :p

The copy of Doom3 that I bought 2 years ago (I have a soft spot for John Cormmack and Id in Texas since the original quake engine powered the first Half Life game) still sits unused brand new in the box. Once I got into military style fps shooters I never went back - the mutants in Far Cry were almost too much for me.

So, everybody off fighting monsters, and still no hang gliding? Pshaw!! LOL

Yeah estuansis- maxing everything at your native res. That sounds fantastic!!

What does everybody think I should do for a 24" LCD? I might do that before the new build. They seem to be running $500 to $1000, 5ms or 6ms response time, 92% of full Adobe rgb color range, 160 degree viewing angle, they all have 1000 to 1 contrast, blah blah blah. One of them from CAIE or something like that comes with a hood - that might be good because where I play on Wednesdays it's kind of bright in the daytime - but that one is about $900.

As far as I know they haven't and won't due to the game being subsidised by nvidia. Four GPUs from ATI is a bit of a waste in most applications. The % of modern games that work with two GPUs from ATI and nvidia is about 70. For more than two, with nvidia its about 30, ATi about 10.
Windows Vista is also mandatory for the use of more than two GPUs from either company, which is an obvious major downside.

Ah thanks for that Sam. While you posted I edited the above thread and asked about 24" LCD recommendations. I know there's a whole other thread on that - but I might as well ask you guys - YOU know!

So, Sam, to really max out crysis on 2560x1600, it's not going to be 4 gpus, it's going to be the next family from ATI maybe???

Pretty much. As long as you don't use AA, in Windows XP DirectX9 at least, you can max the original game at 2560x1600 on an X2 and it be pretty playable, since you can only have High settings. However, Warhead lets you use Very high, which is doubly unplayable as unlike the original Crossfire is disabled unless you're using Vista. One X2 can certainly max any game at 1920x1200 though, I've tried it.

Hey abuzar, I just wanted to add - I like teasing you about the xbox just because ...... (because I'm evil!!) I know you're saving for a new rig. So did you start Half Life? I found a series with 4 parts on YouTube about the whole Half Life Valve history - VERY interesting stuff.

Thanks for the clarification, Sam. Kind of a catch 22 - have to use Vista to enable crossfire on crysis warhead, but then deal with Vista overhead.

I was thinking today how you play at 1920x1200 by creating THAT size window inside your 30" screen. So does that turn out to be more or less the same size, when you do that, as if you had a 24" screen. Do you lose anything?

Because if not, it might make more sense to invest in the 30", run it at 1920x1200 on the really "bitchy" nvidia fanboy games like crysis, but still have the 30" for other games, and for when ATI develops stronger GPUs. What do you think?

It's 23" since the 3007WFP is a higher dpi screen than a 24" (sharper picture), plus since its inside a 30" screen it appears smaller than it actually is.
Your resolution strategy is very wise, or heck, even just turn the detail down from enthusiast to gamer. Yes, the game doesn't look as good, but it's Crysis, just one game.

Ok, well the 23 inch sounds okay, because higher density means sharper image!! And the "looks smaller than it is because it is inside of the other screen" - that doesn't bother me, just an optical illusion! :p

But "just one game." Come on - it's THE game! It's the game all you graphics pixel gorging dudes rave about. If I'm gonna gear up for eye-candy - I'm gonna go all the way. (New build natch.)

So you think maybe makes sense - instead of forking out $600-800 or so for 24", just go - what - $1200-1400?? and go all the way to 30" for the games that will work okay at 2560x1600, and drop down to that 23" window inside the screen at 1920x1200 for the graphics card bruising "bitch" games like crysis??

Realistically, should I try to find used? What LCD 30" do you like?

Oh you said 3007WFP - is that still the one you recommend??

3007WFP is the one I have. The 3008WFP is the newer model, which includes inputs for games consoles, TV boxes, you name it.

Wow, $2300 bucks or so. Yikes.

    :O

Hmmmmmm - how about something just as good - no difference in quality - without all those inputs. Does that put us back at the 3007WFP - for closer to $1500? Or am I dreaming??
