thanks Sam. I'm pasting into a text file on this computer (the other one is the gaming computer.) There are probably some movies on YouTube that I could watch on common installation of a PSU. For a complete noob like me, would you recommend I watch one or two?

It's not really hard, four screws and its in. If it doesn't fit, it's not right. Watch a video if you like, it won't do you any harm.

    That's what I thought you'd say :p
Well I was more concerned with missing some vital cable connections - but you advised on cpu - of course I'll be paying attention when I take the old one out. Ok thanks

Yeah I won't screw it up too bad :D They shipped it two days ago.

They are located about 40 miles from here in Southern California which costs me 8% more in CA sales tax, which if I bought from Tiger Direct for example, I wouldn't have to pay. Newegg has a warehouse also in Tennessee, and one in New Jersey 3000 miles away. So where did they ship my stuff from, New Jersey of course!! LOL

Hahahaha - yeah, that makes sense - ship to you from 3,000 miles away in New Jersey, or 6,000 miles in California - "Well let's just send Sam his cpu from 6,000 - give that chip a RIDE!!!"

I played their video which says they are the number 2 electronics e-retailer at just under $2 billion per year - who is number 1?

Oh - and without getting political "No politics!" Yes Loco!

    HISTORIC ELECTION IN THE US!!!

Some 300 years or so after Britain first outlawed the slave trade - the first African American President in United States history! A watershed event for the entire world, and a big boost to all democracies around the world! Congratulations to all! Great concession speech by McCain calling attention to the unique significance of the election.

Out of the 8800GTX and 8800GTS, the HD4850 is better. :)

Any 8800GTX you'll find will be second hand now, and I think the same now goes for the GTS in the UK.

I can't say much, I voted for McCain... he gave a dignified speech though. Very tasteful.

First black president in history too. The most powerful man in the modern world is black. That's a real testament to freedom the world over.

As far as an 8800GTS or GTX, I wouldn't get either as they are both really outdated now(except maybe a GTS 512MB). If you had to get an 8800 series card right now, the 8800GT can be found for cheap and is still pretty widely available. It's within 10% performance-wise to the 8800GTX.

If you can swing it, get an HD4850. Even with only a 2.6GHz AMD X2, an HD4850 will show a nice improvement over an 8800.

As far as a PSU... probably the Corsair 450VX, any Corsair really. OCZ(StealtXStream 600W is the only one I really recommend), Corsair, Zalman, Silverstone, Gigabyte, Antec, BeQuiet. Any solid PSU from any of those brands over 400W will run that rig without a single problem. I'd aim for 500W at least to make sure you have enough amperage on the 12v line. The actual system will suck maybe 250W or something similar at load.

It doesn't take much for a stock clocked single card system. I only got the 620W because my system will take well over 500W under stressing conditions AND at startup. Crossfire HD4870s with multiple HDDs sucks a lot of power.

Most PSU blowouts happen when you turn it on due to all the drives spinning up at boot.

Sam, I bet you already found this, but it's really interesting. Apparently, the 600W SXS is near the same unit as the excellent Zalman ZM600-HP. And look on page 2. They show the SXS 600W, the GXS 700W, and the Zalman ZM600-HP. They are all nearly identical internally with the Zalman having better heatpipe cooling and bigger heatsinks and whatnot.

I feel better and better about that buy every day. $85 was a steal for that PSU :) LOL, on page 8, they make it push 729W!!!!!!!!!!!

To put it in perspective. My own 620HX didn't shut down until about 780W. So the OCZ StealthXStream is clearly within the same ballpark as a Corsair, IMO.

    Definitely major historic event!!

The picture from Shamb1es is great!

Hey navskin, the corsair 450 that is on its way to me has 33 amps on the 12 volt rail. Estuansis, that should be plenty for him, shouldn't it?

Yes, the Corsair 450VX would be fine for most single card configurations. I can't see where his system would need much more.

The 600W Zalman is fine, but far from exemplary, the Corsair HX 620W is a much better unit. Only the 850W and 1KW Zalmans are in the 'superb' category.
