I'm not sure what the new stepping is. Run CPUZ and show us the screenshot. Someone might recognise it. When did you buy the CPU?
There's a very good range of air cooler here for the 775 SKT CPU's. Your best spending a few hours doing some research on them all and seeing what ones perform best, also bear in mind the size of them, and ensure that they fit into you case without any obstructions. http://specialtech.co.uk/spshop/customer/home.php?cat=223 Here's a selection of water-cooling kits as well, but again you'll need to research then to see how effective they are: http://specialtech.co.uk/spshop/customer/home.php?cat=605
Look on the side of the box the CPU came in and make a note of the batch number, this will show the exact details you need, such as build date.
You may well be pleased to hear that your batch is a very good one. On air it's been clocked up to 4.2 GHz. Very lucky indeed.
wow what a releive. now will i need to get a new heatsink/fan before i can overclock to around 3.4GHZ
there is a new cpu hsf air cooling king given the right fan is used. the thermalright ultra 120 extreme. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835109140 it even bested the tuniq tower using the same fan (scythe s-flex 120mm). http://www.anandtech.com/casecooling/showdoc.aspx?i=2943 humzaSM, the stepping and revision of your E6600 are the same as mine. my batch number is L631B057
Mort81 maybe you could help me get my cpu up to 3GHz until i get the thermalright ultra 120 extreme then i might look to go 3.8GHz BigDK told me i have a very good batch.
BigDK, that's good to know. I'm comfortable where mine's at. I might consider getting one of the thermalright ultra 120 extremes one of these days. I'm gonna stay away from water cooling for now anyway. humzaSM, it's not absolutely necessary, but I do recommend removing your NB and SB chipset heatsinks and reseating them with some artic silver 5. you might even consider adding a 40 x 40mm chipset fan to them. I used 40 x 40 x 20mm fans and it reduced my mobo temp considerably. it ran about 44 - 45 C prior to the mod and it's running 31 C right now although it is cooler in here right now than usual (69 F). when it warms up to normal spring/summer temps (78 F) it runs about 34 C at idle.
Starting to have a play with the new CPU now, so far very good, stable at 3.2Ghz ITAT passes 1 hour with no issues. CPU temp at idel with stock cooler is 31`C and the chipset is at 27`C. Will crank it up a bit more later today, as I'm also doing a load of video work this weekend, so time for playing is limited. Batches for my E6600's are: L628A370 (OLD ONE) L639F020 (NEW ONE)
humzaSM, BigDK is the man to talk to. we both OC a little differently. he lowers the multiplier and raises the fsb to 400mhz to get the fsb:dram ratio at 1:1 with DDR2 PC6400 memory. I like keeping the multiplier at 9x raising the fsb slowly and underclocking the memory to keep it at 1:1 fsb:dram ratio until I reach my target OC and then I try bumping up the memory a notch (OC'ing it). try following the same steps he gave to pszczoll. remember to keep an eye on your cpu temp especially since your still using stock cpu hsf.
ok.... someone tell me what to do as long as i can OC to 3GHZ ill be happy for the moment until i get the new heat sink and fans.
what memory do you have? you need to set the correct dram voltage. what bios version? you need the latest stable and tested bios version because if you update the bios later it will set everything back to default settings. latest good bios for the P5W DH Deluxe is 1901.
before you order the thermalright ultra 120 extreme, read that review. there was a flaw with the mounting hardware for C2D. most can probably get around it. the zalman CNPS9700LED and artic freezer 7 pro are also very good cpu hsf's.
