I was wondering about that too, but never really looked into it. Is it really true Opteron has half the HT speed of that of the A64 (1GHz vs. 2 GHz)?? Damn! But how much performance difference will that mean in the real world I wonder ?

For now I'm assuming the A64 3800+ X2 and the Opteron 170 will OC about equally well. With the right cpu-(and case-)cooling that extra heat from the bigger L-2 cache shouldn't be a limiting factor in how far those processors can be overclocked I think. After all isn't it the processor core that determines that?..

CK5134 said what I was thinking already: "the venus core opterons are 100% identical to the san diego athlon 64's".
They can also both be installed on the same S939 boards.
So why then does AMD half the HTT on the Opteron (or double it on the Athlon64)??

Suppose you have a S939 computer running an Athlon64 San Diego and then exchange the cpu to an Opteron at the same clock speed...
Both cpu's are identical, both have the full 1MB of cache enabled, and the rest of the computer of course also remains unchanged. The only change then would be the HTT (form 2GHz to 1GHz). Would I notice a decrease in system performance? Looking purely at the 'numbers' you would have to think YES, but I wonder.

Have any of you guys ever tried such an 'experiment' ??

You know what...I'm just gonna get me a new system and BOTH of those processors, test both scenarios for a while, and then report back to y'all ;-) LOL

I don't know, because I have never used or seen anyone use an opteron. I do know that Opterons are designed for servers and are designed to perform better around 8GB+ of memory, and extensive demands from different users all at the same time. Not with desktops in mind.

"With the right cpu-(and case-)cooling that extra heat from the bigger L-2 cache shouldn't be a limiting factor in how far those processors can be overclocked I think. After all isn't it the processor core that determines that?.."

Damn, why don't you just read the posts above. Everythgin on die decides overclockign and yes, the double L2 will make a nticable clockign difference, you will be stopped sooner in the same conditions you could have gone farther with Athlon.

Any word on how to overclock the Turions form AMD. I have an ML-28 1.6GHz I'd liek to bump up once in awhile while at my desk, but I can't find a BIOS or clockgen program to unlock the voltage and multi.

    opterons are overclockable.
i use older athlon mp's since their multipliers are unlocked and overclock as much as i can with phase cooling

Gigabyte GA-7DPXDW-P (Supports AGP 4x/2x only)
    2x AMD Athlon MP 2800+ (2133MHz with 512kb L2 Cache) overclocked to 3190MHz (both)
    4x 512MB Kingston PC2900 Ram overclocked to 204MHz
    Phase II watercooling system
    GeForce 6600LE 256MB at 660MHz (4x)
    450Watt PS generic

cost about 600$ total. Gets 36302 MIPS and 12888 MFlops (doesnt support SSE2)

How do you put your PC specs on your reply?

That's done via a signiature, normally, so in the "my account" tab.
FOUR 6600s? How well does that perform??
I quite like the idea of a 3.2Ghz Core speed for any AMD processor, and at that configuration level it's insane. How did you get it for only $600?

HI, i am trying to oveclock my cpu (Amd 2800+ Barton {unlocked}) but i have have tried like 30 different combinations of frequency and multiplier and voltage an i cant seem to get anyhing to work, does any one have an idea. if need more info just ask.

    My Current setup:
    166 mhz
    12.5X
    1.625v
    Running at 2.083

Described what won't won't work, how, when, where, why... and what you did to get it to not work and by what increment etc etc etc

ok umm all the changes i have tried to make were in the bios, under advanced chipsets. I dont really know about increments, i have tried raising the freq up from 166 to 200, (100/166/200) and left the multiplier alone at 12.5x but my post says it fails and the screen wont come on, umm here is wht i have tried.

    200 200 166 166 200 200 200 200 200
    12.5 14 12 12 13 13.5 10.5 11 9.5
    1.650 1.825 1.650 1.825 1.825 1.850 1.825 1.825 1.650

    166 166 200 200 200 166 166 200 166
    13 13.5 10.5 9.5 12.5 14 13 13 13
    1.850 1.700 1.650 1.625 1.850 1.825 1.825 1.825 1.675

    166 200 166 166 200 200 166
    10.5 9.0x17.0 7.0x15.0 7.0x15.0 12.5 12.5 13.5
    1.625 1.850 1.700 1.850 1.800 1.825 1.850

well thats what i have tried so far. theres more options i can try but i dont know. i dont know if my memory needs to be adjusted or wht, can some one help me

ok ok i have messed with it some more and came up with
    182
    12.5
    1.700
this config is running at 2.83ghz

i cant seem to get anything else to work, does any one have any ideas. maybe i need to adjust my memory timings, when i boot up it shows memory running at 218 mhz Dual channel.

any one else have any ideas

hi there ... I have one question ... how high shall I OC my xp2000+ on my kt600? I heard that kt600 like kt300 is not for OC ... shall I go higher than now? (2000Mhz -> 10x 200 1,650V

Just try incrementing the speed until you cant increment it any more, then reset back a couple of stages.

Hey, I have a Pentium2 at 333Mhz and it's overclocked to 416 with a 86Mhz FSB. I used this realy neet program called softFSB, and you can get it at http://www.geocities.com/enigmadeadsouls/softfsb.html. ok...i know i sed a P2, but it works at my friends house and he has an AMD64 3200. I'm save'n up for a Dule-core 930 and i'm go'n to overclock'n her to 3.5...When i get the money ;)

Well OK, but be careful with Intel dual cores, they need ridiculous amounts of cooling to keep them running stock, I can forsee that much of an overclock a bit on the hot side. Are you sure I can't tempt you into getting an Athlon64 X2 instead?

I'm considering an AMD X2 4200, but I hear that Intel have more head room when is comes to overclocking. I'm not too concerned about cooling because ether AMD or Intel im go'n for a liquid cooler.
    Thanks for your input man

Nah, you heard wrong, AMD has far more headroom for overclocking.

Well, I challenge anyone to take an opinion like that seriously, but I agree with you wholeheartedly.

    OK here's what I have

    Asus a8n-sli Mobo
    Athlon64 3200+ 939 Venice DH-E6 (stock 2.0GHz)
    1 gig of Kingston ddr400 pc3200 2x512

    My settings right now are
    CPU-2.55GHz (10x255@1.5v)
    RAM-2.5-3-3-6@2.8v/213.31MHz
    HTT-x4
    PCI Synch-33.33

I can run this setting for gaming and evryday use for days straight without a problem. I ran Prime95 last ngiht and it lasted about 8 hours before I got an error. Should this bother me too much if it hasn't effected the performance of my tasks so far?

Also,if there's anything that can/should be changed with my settings...I'm all ears to any ideas.
