That ATi is going to take the top spot. Conroe is a given, even if small. Ironic as AMD and ATi are partners now!
Well if you read up about ATi's and Nvidia's technologies ATi are looking at what will be needed and are pushing to prduce that (the R600 for DX10) whereas Nvidia are just chasing after ATi / trying to beat ATi's current production chips. The G80 chip from Nvidia will not be fully DX10 compliant, whereas the R600 from ATi will be, yes ATi's chip is being released a few months later, but Nvidia wont be able to make up the lost ground (having a full DX10 compliant chip) in the time that there is.
Yeah, trsut them to do that...well it is partly runable, and Vista runs on DX9 cards anyways, so technicaly it is Vista compatable. Back on topic, I got some new RAM for my PC now I'm running 1200mb of Kingston DDR 200mhz RAM. I was running 512mb Kingston and 1000mb of unbranded stuff, removing my overclocking ablilities. With this new RAM I have overclocked my PC again, I put it to the max of 2.5GHz (that's the most my mobo allows) and kept getting crashes in games, so figured I would go down the correct route of overclocking. I'm running OCCT and Speedfan (SF just because idealy OCCT needs it) and it crapped out at 2.5GHz, and thenagain at 2.45GHz and so far it is running stably at 2.4GHz using about 97% of the CPU pushing the temp up from 35c to 47c (well in the limits of my AMD Althon 64 3000+). This test runs for about 30mins and full pushes your CPU and will automaticaly stop if it encounters a problem and you can easily stop it if you think it's getting hot. If anybody is overclocking make sure you run stress testers before you run anything else incase you completely mess up your PC. I don't mind screwing mine up so will run things anyways, probably best not to take after me
Yeah, 1.2GB Kingston RAM, 2x512 1x256 I often list it as the MB instead of the GB. Ok, so technically it's 1256MB, and 1.25GB but i's close enough.
New here, hope some help is available..I just got a new Board GIGABYTE K8 TRITON [GA-K8VM800M]W/AMD SEMPRON 3100+ I'M a little disappointed its only 1.8MGz..It seems to run slowew then my older E-Machine T2625 ATHLON 2.0GHz 2600+
1.8Ghz doesn't matter, it'll run more like a 2.7, your XP 2600+ would be more like a 2.3. It won't be much faster, but a bit, and it'll be a lot faster in Vista. I assume you still have as much RAM and as good a GPU etc.
no rick, mhz isn't the only factor in how fast a CPU is. AMD CPUs have technology that means that with a low mhz speed they can run like a faster mhz processor. Although the Sempron is 1800mhz versus 2165mhz, it will run like a P4 2700 whereas the 2165mhz XP would run like a P4 2300, that's how AMDs work. Vista is the next version of windows that'll be faster on 64-bit CPUs like your sempron - the XP was 32-bit.
There are other factors to consider like buss speed and hypertransport. I would be a little leary of vista. It still has some bugs.
Well rick I'd say first off you need to get more RAM, 512mb RAM with Windows XP is a very small amount really, get like another 512mb or 1024mb and it'll run a lot faster. The PC's speed isn't just dependant on the processor it's also on the RAM and the motherboard, if that's a new motherboard then it should run nice and fast with some more RAM.
LOL I'm not going for Vista until at least 6 months after it's out, possibly 12. You would want 1GB of RAM to get best results though, I regularly exceed 512 in windows, I've exceeded 800 once!
InvGIR..Thanks..I appreciate your help..Any input on what type of ram to buy..I'll probably buy 2 new 512's instead of 1024..Just in case one goes ZAP!!
Sure, that makes more sense than you think. 2 sticks = dual channel = faster and cheaper. I'm using 2x1024 in my next system because 1024 is as high as you can get at present.
