have you done it to one of your motherboards in the past?
    what happened if/when you did?

Not me fortunately, but i know quite a few people that smoked a graphics card from doing it.

    well thats good to hear
too bad for those ppl, i hate killing hardware myself (i have killed my share of motherboards, hehe), fortunately they were all the "free" motherboards that you get from Fry's whenever you buy a CPU from them...

I've only killed Asus boards, and I don't blame myself, but that's another story. I would say I smoked my old MSI MS-6775 off a cheap PSU, but it still worked afterwards, after all the smoke and flames... Note - this is not an excuse to think you can get away with cheap PSUs! lol

Well I managed to read up and find out pin/pad mod I could do on my E2180, tried to used a pencil but that didn't work so I used a thin piece of copper wire and bent and electrical tapped it on. It works now thinks it's a 1066mhz fsb 2.66ghz, runs pretty standard 35C under load highest was 48C ran stress test didn't run into any problems. My only question now is i know i can mod it to a 1333mhz fsb, but i don't know if i should since my P965T-A doesn't support it even though the bios shows it can.

it won't boot up if the motherboard doesn't support 1333mhz FSB cpus natively....
same case with my striker, it can overclock to 1600mhz fsb but that doesn't mean i can use a 1600mhz fsb cpu in it! i can only overclock a 1066mhz or a 1333mhz fsb cpu to 1600mhz....

Without know what your stuff is there is a possibility that the voltage settings on your RAM might be a little be too low. Some enthusiast RAM requires a higher than default setting to post. If you have some lower quality RAM try using that and then if it boots go into bios and increase the RAM voltage to the desired level.

If that's not it then check to see if you've accidentally loosened a panel connection.

I decided to set my OC back a little since I felt I was pushing things a little hard for daily use. I dropped it back to 3.83ghz for the time being anyways.

    Soph,

a few question for you if you don't mind as I'm still learning as well. I'm trying to lower some voltages a little.

I have my NB voltage set at 1.45v. std is 1.25v. on auto the mobo overvolts it to 1.62 which is too high for my liking. I did have it at 1.55v.

I have my FSBT voltage set at 1.39v which is exactly the same voltage it sets to on auto. std is 1.20v. funny thing is, when I manually set it to 1.39v the setting turns yellow (warning) although it's the same voltage as when set to auto. I did have it at 1.42v.

how do these voltages look to you? these voltage settings are one thing I am yet to master and probably set them higher than necessary sometimes.

How are your temperatures? As long as they re in line then 1.45v is just fine even with a yellow indicator, but if they're constantly running high then you might want to look at adding a fan to it. The same can be said of all of your settings. The key is always temperatures. I know I said spoke some about electromigration but that's directed more to long term use. In a year from now we will be discussing a completely different setups.;)

they're a little on the warm side during the summer months. I keep the thermostat at 76F in the summer and 73F in the winter.

my mobo temp now is 36C (32-33 winter months) and my NB is 45C (42-43 winter months). the thermal limit for my NB is 90C which I thought was amazing.

3.83 is a jaw dropping speed! very very nice overclock! is this a 45nm? (the server part to the e8400?)
i need to run higher NB and FSB voltages just to get to 3.3ghz.....

    im,

it's a E3110 45nm cpu. the xeon version of the E8400. I had been running at 4.0ghz but decided to back it down a little for daily use.

I don't even know. I bought it tray/oem since I intend on upgrading to a Q9450 before long. no purdy box with all the numbers and I didn't bother to write anything down off the top of the cpu.

There is a subtle difference between the E3110 and the E8400. The E3110 is binned for its lower voltages because most xeons are bought for use in servers where power savings are the most important factors. Other than that they are the same.

is it possible that intel has been binning q6700/q6600 a lil higher cause they figured out that we (overclockers) love cpus with low VIDs?
cause my q6700 runs Prime 95 for 8hrs (stopped by me) with only 1.2v(set in BIOS) and about 1.15 (after vdroop)....on stock speed
but the VID for my cpu is 1.325v.....

    hi,
i did a mod to my CPU that allows it to run at 333 x 9 (it doesnt load windows at 333 x 10 w/default voltages) at default voltages!!! no need to pump voltage to the NB or the CPU!
sorry for the crappy pic, i just got a new camera and don't really know how to use it yet....
