Okay so I didn't even have to RMA to find out what I will get back.
I just called them today and the guy said that they have PLENTY of E6300s in their RMA warehouse. So, I have decided not to RMA.

Back to overclocking, as this IS the overclocking forum...
What voltage should it take for my E6300 to reach 3.6GHz?
Is that speed even possible on such a low end C2D?

You could possibly make that, but I expect it would probably take at least 1.5V, which is my recommended absolute max for a 65nm CPU.

is that before vdroop or after?
    and is that 24/7 safe?

Ideally before, but LLC shouldn't cause too much harm. It's 24/7 safe, but not for any longer than around 12-18 months.

so the cpu would die after 12 - 18 months?

Not necessarily, but there's a reasonable chance it will. 1.45V is much safer. That's what I used for my E4300 to reach 3.2Ghz (it wouldn't go much further though) and that still runs to this day at the age of 27 months (It was overclocked to 1.45V for about 18 of those months)

Agreed, 1.45v is plenty safe. Thats what I've got my e6750 at and it's been there since october 07.

with the x48, i got the e6300 up to 3.4ghz
havent played with the quad yet...

how do u do that thingy where you can post a cpuz validation and it shows up as a smaller pic in the forum?

    I think you mean Thumbnail?
    Imageshack gives you that option.

That's very good for a E6300, it has to be said.

No, it's been up to ~3.8Ghz for a short time but it runs way too hot even on the coldest days. Probably in the next month or two I'll have to drop it down to 3 or 2.6ghz as right now under a full load the cores will max at 60C, which is warmer then I would like them to be. I was thinking of getting better cooling(WC) but the cost doesn't justify the gain, especially since I can buy a much better cpu for less.

60C? I don't sweat it when the cores reach 80ÂșC, which they will if I run a stress test. People and temps these days, I don't understand it.

    eparker89,
Why is it everyone worries so much about the core temps? What's the CPU temp? The difference between the Core temps and the CPU temps, gives a rough approximation of how well your CPU cooler works. 60C sounds about right for the cores if you are stress testing. The CPU itself probably runs about 45-47C, and in the low to mid 30C range at idle! Fairly good for that CPU!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

not a bad clock speed at all for an e6600
i wonder if this e6300 can do 3.8ghz hehehehe at 1.6v maybe?

anyway, i just got my whole system up and running, but i am done for today.
    so far:
    DFI x48 mobo, Q6700 @3.00GHz with stock voltage, 4 gigs ddr2 pc6400, 250gig and 300 gig in raid 0, zalman cnps 9700, 500 watt psu, geforce 8800gts 320meg
and i went the extra mile, or shall i say 2 miles
i did RAID 0 (stripping) AND installed Vista x64!
now i can FINALLY see my 4 gigs of ram lol
