I suppose I did at first LOL! 60C does burn human skin. Perhaps some people just realize that, and automatically think HOT, HOT! LOL!
I think I read somewhere that the rated max temp for the phenom is 65C! So when the cores are close to that, it is an eye opener.
For intels, here's a page here. Looks like its averaging a 65-70C temp. Please note I said AVERAGE!!!

The Tjunction for a e6600 is 85C, so even if it can handle ~80C I wouldn't want it above 75C for peace of mind. Anyway right now it's at 3105 Mhz and according to everest the temps are (idle):
    CPU: 32C
    core #1: 24C
    core #2: 24C

Ambient temp is a 5-10C lower then normal right and if I remember correctly the cores usually average 30C at idle. During a linpack test the core temps almost exactly 60C with the CPU temp a bit higher.

Russ, you mentioned the cpu is usually cooler then cores so what do you think about my temp readings? I've verified the cpu temp with core temp, everest and TAT, all reading very close to each other. If the core temp is higher then the cpu the only thing I can think of is that everest is giving a bad reading, or a sensor could be bad if there are separate core/cpu sensors.

    eparker89,
Yours are a bit low at idle, but I'll almost bet they tend to jump up a bit when you load it down. The cores tend to be less accurate because it's the cores that generate the heat, while the CPU usually reads a bit of a combo because of the CPU cooler. What kind of CPU Cooler do you have?

The cpu cooler is a Arctic freezer 7 pro with mx-2; and yeah the temps do jump under use, usually 30-45C and 50s under high load or hot day. The warm spell seems to have broken in my area though so if the current trend continues I should have room to bring it back up to 3.2Ghz...as an added bonus the ram will run at 1066mhz again :)

    im1992,
Either the q9550 or the q9650 were going to be the replacement for my e6600, if I could afford it. Haven't looked into which one is the better value, but my two-cents is spend the extra $$ and buy from a place that that guarantees EO* stepping rather then taking your chances and praying (like my friend did).

While we're on this topic, how does a q9550 C1 OC? My previously mentioned friend says his won't OC at all pretty much so I've been wondering if just his sucks or if all CO's are very poor OCers.

*correct me if I'm wrong but if I remember correctly the EO OC well

    eparker89,
I thought it was C1 stepping. That's what Newegg shows when you look under the Manufacturers Product Page and it shows the Intel specs. I understand they OC better than the older C1's, but not quite as good as the E0.

then if the q9550 doesnt clock well
then what should i get if i want a yorkfield (the 12meg L2 cache version)?
i really dont want to have to keep switching CPUs
    http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=540268
thats the best i can do with the q6700 (i think)
need to play with the settings a bit
    how about the q9650?
its only like 325 bucks on newegg:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115130
if this cpu can go to 3.6ghz on STOCK VOLTAGES, then i will get it.
can anyone here confirm that it can go to 3.6ghz on stock voltages?

hmm, well i will be buying directly from intel and they should technically have the latest revision...the q9560, at least to me, seems like a steal right now.

    Dude,
It's a work of art! What a nice design too! Every fin is straight as an arrow. It has a huge copper base with 4 individual heatpipes, and it's less than 2.5" tall. It's perfect for the job.

    Thank you again,
    Russ

The max rating for Core 2 Quads is only 71ºC, but that refers to the main CPU temp, not the cores. The max for the cores is usually at least 85.

The Q9550 is a fabulous overclocking chip. A good C1 will make 4.1Ghz, A good E0 perhaps even higher, luck of the draw with the board as much as the CPU of course, but I've hd 3.87 out of mine at least.

Your right it's C1 not C0, thanks for the correction.

i think i will either get the q9650 or the qx9650 (higher multiplier = easier overclocking)
i get them for half off so money is not a problem

    Nice one. I wish I could get a QX9650 half price... :(

Wow. If that were the case for me, I wouldn't mind paying their outrageous prices to see the difference. I'm sorry, I really don't have the right to say that. As I have never built or owned an Intel. However, I have experienced them (family members), and the ones I have, were less than streamlined! I have had worse luck however LOL! It is entirely possible, that the ones I experienced may have been bottle necked by another component, or were simply bad chips, who knows. But at half price...I would certainly strongly consider giving them a shot!

Well, a QX9650 starts off as fast as your 3.5Ghz Phenom II, and can overclock by 50% and beyond. I'll leave it at that... :p

what sort of clock speeds should i expect from a Q9650 vs. QX9650 on this DFI 48 mobo? is 4.5ghz attainable with the non extreme Q9650 for 24.7 usage with a CNPS9700?
