nice, thankx for the quick responces. I will look into the Q9400 1st and compare to Q9550. This project is for a gift and I need to keep it as close to a $200 used price as I can. Who has heard or had any experiences with the Q9505 versions for overclocking? I noticed a later EO stepping (SLB8V) of the Q9550 So is this a better cooler version of the origional C1 available to US 2 yrs bk?

I just want something capable of going a little beyond my old Q6600 on this same mobo when it was new, the ASUS Maximus Formula SE X38 I got it to do 4GHz w/ a bit of tweaking but daily comfort was only 3.8GHz on that core. This mobo loves and does great at 500 FSB so as long as the CPU can get there I'm good to go. i hope they wont need the 12m cache so the 6 should be fine and I think a nice cool, reasonable volted 3.8GHz daily will be just fine.

I'm getting close to 6.4Ghz QPI, should I just keep pushing past that and raise voltage as necessary or is it better to lower the QPI multiplier?

    (i7 930 @ 3.76Ghz [171x22])

    TIA

lower multi, higher bandwidth is always the best, but if you get a higher clock with a higher multi, then do it. i have heard odd multi are the best to work with.

Thanks shaffaaf. Do I need to worry about the ratio of the QPI multi. to any others, like with the ram and uncore (I think that's the one)?

    Sam,
    There was a C0 stepping for the Q9450, along with the C1 stepping. SLAN6= C0 stepping, SLAWR= C1 stepping.

try running RAM to the closest speed it can with the closest timeing, but remember, ram under 1.65V. as for uncore, i need to do some more research, till then im sure sam and 100% sure nucknfuts can help.

I got lazy and just dropped the multiplier on the ram for now. Wish I bought higher speed RAM now, 1600Mhz is fairly limiting when OCing.

I'm not sure exactly how QPI stability is for LGA1366, but I haven't experienced any problems with the default QPI multipler at 4.12Ghz on my i5.
Russ: The C0 for the Q9450 wasn't a newer stepping, it was an older stepping, the first of the CPUs to appear, I don't think there were that many of them.

For some reason I can't my 930 stable past 195x20. Raising the QPI/VTT and Vcore didn't help, am I missing something or does it really want more voltage?

    AISmoked,
I maxed mine at 3.94GHz, but you couldn't run it that fast 24/7. Everyday running was 3.83GHz using a Freezer 7 CPU cooler. A case with good airflow, is a must!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

You ought to check the temperatures when the CPU is under load. Sitting at the desktop CPUs don't get that hot, but under heavy stress such as a video encode or gaming, you will see pretty toasty temps with a 3.84Ghz Pentium D on a small cooler like the Freezer 7.

Lol i have never classed that as a small cooler lol then again apart from this i have only used stock coolers, and i can only check my CPU Temp in bios so i cant find out what it is under load.

Shaff: No, ever seen me own an 8800? Also, the wires are too tidy :p
Omega: I don't have the TX750, that's not my PC. Not sure why you both seem to think it is... :S The 750W TX had four PCIe connectors, whereas the 650 only has two.

Sam, I'm comparing the HX and the TX 750. I think I know the answer though. And the HX750 probably is worth the extra dough just with the extra efficiency alone ;) Not to mention the 7 yr warranty, and extra cables :D I'm gonna buy it!!!
