Okay sounds good. Now lets just hope I can convince my parents that I will not do good in college without an i7 980. LOL.
A bit silly to convince them to get a $1000 CPU really, but having spent $1000 on a graphics card, I can hardly talk
True.....but I tried very hard to talk myself out of it....no go. Lol. Since no one responded to my other thread, how much do you think I can sell a 2 year old Q6700 for? It is in pristine condition (Box looks new, and the sticker/stock heatsink have never been used). thanks, -im1992
LOL! Well, according to ebay, you could still get a decent chunk of change. I see them retailing for over 200$ But I know Jack about intel...
Oh wow....I am surprised someone would still pay that much for such an outdated CPU... I bought it for $144 so getting $200 is awesome. Just gonna downgrade my mom's computer, hehehehe. That money will help me with my i7 980 build
I'm not suggesting you'll get 200 for a used CPU. You'd probably get 100 from the right bidder though. Perhaps the model I was noticing for 200 was some unique model?
Well even a 100 bucks is a lot. I was thinking that it would sell for like 50 bucks as you can get a used i7 920 for 200 bucks these days and they are much faster than the q6700.
I'll give you 50US for it, I've been looking for a good, cheap s775 quad. Let me know if you're interested.
LMFAO, for a Q6700? I think not. On the other hand if you want my Celeron 336 which is also s775, we have us a deal.
I googled "temperatures Core i7 930", and was very surprised to find that these high temps seem to be the norm for the 920, 930 and 940 when overclocked. When people inquire about this on many other forums and tech places, everybody seems to feel that these temps are fine??? My old Pentium D-940 didn't get that hot at 3.94GHz. Even my older 3.0GHz Prescot didn't get that hot at 3.83gHz. Just an observation on my part, but load temps of 74-81C seem awful warm to me. Am I not understanding or missing something here? I've posted this same question on the Building thread as well. Russ
Russ, your 940 started out at 3.2GHz, running at 3.94 was a 23% overclock. The i7 930 starts at 2.8Ghz, so running at 4.01Ghz is a 43% overclock. The i7 930 is a 130W TDP CPU just like the D940, and unlike the 940, the TDP is accurate. With the Pentium Ds, 130W was more accurate for the D8 smithfields, the Preslers were a little more efficient if I remember correctly.
Sam, No offense to anyone, but I am sure glad I didn't go with the i7 920 then, 43% OC be Damned! It would have been a nightmare for me to cool one here, in the summertime. I remember Soph getting the D-805, which was less efficient than the D-9***'s, and overclocking the snot out of it, and he never saw temps that high. What get's me the most is the stock speed temps being posted for the Core i7 9***'s, even using that "HUGE" Megalump (what I call it), or full high quality water cooling system. Now I understand why so many people use it. They need it! You could get a bunch of people together and hold a Barbecue! Thanks for the information. It makes me glad I made the choice I made. Best Regards, Russ
i7s do use a monumental amount of power, which is why I like i5 750s, they're only 95W TDP and it shows. At 4.12Ghz I barely ever see load temps in the 60s, and I only have the same 120mm tower cooler most people use. If you can do without HT and 32x PCIe bandwidth, no reason to buy an LGA1366 chip imo.
Sam, Not unless the LGA1366 comes with an optional Rotisserie and grill! LOL!! At 4.20GHz, at 1.5 volts, mine barely hit 53C fully stressed. I'm sure it would hit 55C in the heat of the summer though. Russ
I would assume he means his 955BE which is, AFAIK, one of the better OCing revisions. 3.9GHz takes 1.55v on my 940BE. Assume there was a bit of a miss.comm. here.
