There's loads of different companies making netbooks now. Whilst SSD sounded good they're significantly slower than a hard drive so i went for a Linux model with a hard drive, blew it all away and XP flies on this thing. Very low power consumption on the Intel Atom yet incredibly powerful. My rucksack was noticibly much lighter today after carrying around the HP lappie around for 3 years, this netbook is something like a kilo yet it's like my bag was empty :)

Anyways, i was originally going to buy the SSD version as those are vastly cheaper than a HDD model but that would've meant total dismantling and sourcing a suitable hard drive, it made sense to go for the middle model (the upper model was the same but with XP as opposed to Linux) and wipe/reinstall. The wifi is a tad crap as it's the less than decent Atheros chipset but it'll do the job. I'd have preferred the proverbial Broadcom wifi chipset but hey, can't expect everything in a very cheap netbook.
Just thought i'd post a few details in case anyone else is contemplating a netbook purchase.

160GB drives are ancient by design, and also much less complex than bigger drives (fewer platters), so not really an ideal judge. Hell, if they're recent drives, they may even be single platter, so it's not a fair comparison.
Every large Seagate since 7200.9 is noisy when seeking, no exceptions. On the other hand, none of the WD drives I've had other than the Raptor and 160GB IDE have been loud, and the same goes for the Samsungs, though they have their own disadvantages in the form of vibration noise.

i just took a 2hr techie test for a job after being out of work for a few months and like anyone else i'm only human so a touch rusty and unsurprisingly feel like crap after being expected to be as sharp as when i was working, so am having a good old beer-up. If any of you were local you'd have been invited :)
Am 40 in a few weeks and wanted to have landed a new job by then :)

I drive so everywhere's (fairly) local but being boozed up puts paid to that :p

Having replies to my (very rare) drunken/self-pitying incoherence is all helping though :)

..i won't derail the thread further even when worse for wear, spammers and idiot console forum posters take note :) :)

I don't care for Ultra PSUs, too many of them are rebadged extra value brand buckets of poop. Some of them are reasonably well designed, but in my mind, it's better to buy PSUs with a bit more engineering credibility.

    Rick,
The rest of it is decent for it's intended purpose. I know I'm a bit paranoid when it comes to cheap PSUs, but then I'm also the one who walked in the door, just as the drapes lit up! LOL!! Experiences like that tend to make you that way!

    Rick,
The one Sam suggested would be better than any of the 3 that you listed. AVOID Coolmax like it was the Plague! They are horrible. This is from personal experience! I bought 3, and every one of them went bad. Newegg didn't even want me to send them back, and just told me to throw them away. They are cheap junk! After the replacements went bad too, I negotiated with newegg for Thermaltakes TR-2s at a good price, to replace them!

That monitor keeps showing up... :p
I'm not fond of Acer monitors at all, it could be good, but Acer have made some really poor stuff in the past, I tend to prefer quality brands for monitors, you do stare at them whenever you use your PC.

Acer 19" monitors are fine, i've had/got a fair few of them - two different types (of the cheaper ones), they're perfectly fine :)

Just my opinion based on owning and abusing my 20.1" one for 2 1/2 years. All the less expensive ones use the same screen anyway!

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824112015

Same price and there service is very good if needed and they even have a flat rate repair for after warranty that is unbelievable! Mine after running 14-17 hours a day for 2 1/2 years needs repair as the driver board is going out, and it's $75 flat rate! Way cheaper than any other place!
