    POINT OF INTEREST
    Blue Badge Patch for Windows 7

    Rafael from WithinWindows has just released a patch to patch the Windows 7 build(6801) released at the recent PDC 2008 in Los Angeles. This build is the build that Microsoft handed out at the event, some how Rafael has found a way, or made a way to unlock some new features from the build shown at the conference. It’s only available for 32 bit systems(x86) the version for the 64 bit system will be released tomorrow. The files it patches are not automatically backed up so it’s highly recommend that you back up these files before they are patched! I know one feature that you all wanted is the new taskbar, yes it’s unlocked in this! That files the are patched and need to be backed up are below:

    * \Windows\Explorer.exe
    * \Windows\System32\wisptis.exe
    * \Windows\System32\ieframe.dll
    * \Windows\System32\shell32.dll
    * \Windows\System32\stobject.dll
    * \Windows\System32\TabletPC.cpl
    * \Windows\System32\themecpl.dll
    * \Windows\System32\themeui.dll
    * \Windows\System32\powercfg.cpl

    It unlocks a version of the new taskbar, but those features were locked for a reason. They aren't finished properly and have some bugs.

    Still pretty cool. I'll run that patch today.

    I have read of numerous problems in this area, with only the ODDs affected! You aren't alone and they are with all different brands of motherboards. I don't know whether it's the drives themselves or what! Did you try googling the problem? It's the main reason I stick with the IDE ODD drives! They don't seem to have problems! I have 6 Intel Sata ports and two Gigabytes, so I have 8 total. I can Hot Swap with the Gigabytes! I've heard that some people consider the Gigabytes (Realtec)Junk, but you won't her that from me! I use those to test other peoples hard drives or for an external. Just plug them in and they install themselves, and when you are done, Just click on that little green arrow thing to remove it. Beats shutting the computer down every time!

    Been using an LG 20x S-ATA DVD burner on my Gigabyte for months with zero issues... Maybe it's ICH10 related?

    Could any one help?
    Im looking at building my first p.c, I am not going to be aiming for a top end gaming rig, but a system that will let me play games. I am looking along the lines of a Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 CPU and a 9600GT GPU. Now im foxed on the rest of it, I dont know what motherboard,ram,psu e.t.c to get. I want a system with a bit of upgrading potential with regards to the GPU but SLI is not essential. Lets say I have aprox £500 to spend on the system, any advice on components would be helpfull
    Thanx

    I seen too many problems reported on other forums and tech sites in the last year and a half to two years, (and the ICH10 wasn't even out then), for it to be that! That's why I suggested googling it, as there should be a lot about it on line! It's the main reaso I chose IDE when I built my computer. Everything was new, so i could have gone either way. Since I saw no speed advantage, I chose IDE.

    Everyone that has IDE ODDs might be interested in this as well!

    Well, I had no issue burning stuff with the 20x S-ATA drive I use (LG GH-20NS15) but then I very rarely burn discs.

    A lot of people have had problems though! I didn't try a Sata, so I don't know about mine. The link I gave was for IDEs only. It increases the burning speed to a higher data transfer rate! Neat! It tells you all that it does on the first link page! I may get one myself, since I use IDE for my ODDs.

    Now why would you run something you know has bugs?? ROFLMSOAO!! Like so many things in Windows, it could cause all sorts of problems and it might be impossible to remove like SP3 was on the AMD! I had to wipe everything and start over! Just a thought!

    Ummm, you guys realize I'm running an ALPHA version of Windows 7. It's not even beta yet and I'm running it on a spare computer.

    Trust me, I don't care about bugs.

    P.S. For the guy with the new computer thing goin on, I don't know how much more it is but I would recommend a Q6600. Better in the long run.

    I had a far bigger improvement going from a 3.2Ghz E4300 to a 3.2Ghz Q6600 than I did from a 3.2Ghz Q6600 to a 3.8Ghz Q9550, so I suspect you may be right.

    the GP is better because it saves you energy.

    abuzar1: Is it really going to be that much of a significant difference, how much energy can a HDD use

    True, but the amount of energy saved isn't enough to matter. I prefer the straight 7200 rpm ones myself. Just one more thing to go wrong, IMO! One of the things I know about bearings is that they develop a set and they don't like speed changes because it changes the frequency in doing so. Add to that, any noise it does make will be consistent at a steady speed. I've installed a couple of the variable ones at my customer's request, and I didn't like the change in frequency at all. It was annoying! Add a second one and it's even more annoying! One good thing about a steady sound is that you get used to it and don't even notice it at all, after a while. If you were going to save a lot on electricity, I could see it. But like I said, the amount of energy saved is almost nothing as the controller running it eats up almost as much as it saves.

    The Greenpower drives don't actually make any noise though, so I'm surprised to hear you say it annoy you. A Greenpower runs at 19-21dB versus the 27-34dB of a Seagate. The energy saving over a year is around 10 dollars, based on a PC being on 12 hours a day. Not much, but every little helps, and as I said before, I recommend them for quietness, you can disable the speed change if you like, the power saving still exists if you do that - 7W versus the 12W of 7200.10s.
