Sophocles, thanks for the links - an excellent product. No doubt - Corsair did a good job with this product. They talk about an excellent waterblock and ease of installation. You might pick up a little noise being external like that - you've got 1800 rpm pushing over 70cfm through that radiator right in front of you - they had some db charts with a variety of comparisons.

My new case is going to be the Tempest, which also does put out some noise with lots of case airflow. They claim it is a mid-tower, but it's about 1/2 inch narrower, 1/2 inch shorter, and 1/2 inch as tall as a full tower - so it's pretty big.

I think I'd prefer a solution that went completely inside if I went with water. Plus the tempest apparently is set up to mount a radiator on top - there are two 140mm fans up there. So I guess I'd be looking at an internal pump - mount the radiator where the fans already are, and add some quality waterblocks, like that swiftech gtz Shaff just posted. What do you think about Shaff's component list above? He's got that beautiful Lian-li Buckingham Palace he's stuffing full of goodness! LOL

On the Swiftech, the pump is on the heatsink and the leaking problems have been resloved. They recommend installing it as a sandwich with the Radiator being the meat in between the case and Rear fan! I would prefer to put it on the outside with the case being the meat between the fan and radiator. The Corsair is a good unit, but I don't much care for it's mobility. I have a cat that just pushes everything out of her way, and I would be upset if I found it dangling in the breeze! Does it have an option to be securely bolted down?

One of the main things I like about the Swiftech is regardless of whether you mount it inside or out, it's securely mounted to the case! I was seriously thinking about the Swiftech for my computer, but it looks like I'm selling it so I can build an AMD, and I won't need water cooling for that! Not with a 45w CPU, anyway!

If the NZXT Tempest is anything like any of NZXT's past cases, it'll be far from noisy. Usually they use 1100rpm fans, which even in 140mm variety will be nice and quiet.

Agreed sammy, the 140mm fans (AeroCool) that I've messed with are dead quiet and push plenty of air. ;) I like the Tempest case as well. I looked at it when they first came out but haven't purchased anything and won't until I make a decision on a new CPU and mobo. I still want to do some research on the new stuff from Intel. It's NOT that over priced and it also seems that good things are happening. :D

the price's truly isn't that bad for the new I7 stuff, other than the big CPU the X965 just over $1000. the 940 is a little high but not much more than the Q9650 just over $550 and the 920 @ $299 which is less than the Q9550. so they can be had. its just the mobo is almost twice as much as a LG775 mobo depending on model. and the DDR3 3channel mem isn't all that bad either. 3gb of triple channel ddr3 from corsair is only $119. and i think it might have been Soph or even docTY say that Quad channel mem is in the works for the I7 stuff. Corsair dominator series even has a 3gb triple channel series with a low cas8 latency 8-8-8-24 and they are only $179. as for the coolers to go with the I7 there is only a few that are designed just for them. and plenty of existing coolers with adapters. with the I7 being bigger than the LGA775 cpus I'm not sure i wont a adapter.I'm sure the I7's will need plenty of faceplate to keep all 8 cores cool.

there is a lot of fun stuff here going on with the I7 just coming out. along with others though I'm not ready to gang onto the bandwagon and be one of the first Guinea pigs. I'm sure there is some bugs to be worked out still, from what Ive read not to many or that big but there is bugs.so I'm sure a good 6 months from now I7 will rule the PC world. and then i can afford to get on the badnwagon....lol sorry to ramble like that.

AHHH, NOW you guys come around to my way of thinking!

lol and Before everyone was telling me off for supporting i7. It's new tech, of course it will be bit expensive at first. You guys remember how expensive DDR2 Ram used to be?

Yeah, it's about $180, or £140, for 3GB of high performance DDR3, versus $110 ($70 after rebates) or £90 for 4GB of high performance DDR2. Realistically, 3GB isn't sufficient for high brow systems, so you're going to need 6GB. 4GB on the other hand, is sufficient.

I was a guinea pig for the 45nm quads (Q9450) so waiting for I7 is understandable.

True, to a point! That's cas 9 memory there! cas 7 would be better, but more expensive!

I just had an interesting problem crop up with my computer. Because of all the dust here, I usually clean everthing out every couple of months with a small vacuum cleaner hose and blow everything out with compressed air. A couple of days after I cleaned it I noticed my temps being 3 or 4 degrees higher than I expected them to be. I also noticed my Core temps being a lot higher than normal so I decided to pull the AF7-Pro and install one that I have on hand. Usually I wash it in dish detergent and then blow it out with air to get all the little bits of grunge out. This time I had released 3 of the 4 push pins, when I discovered the 4th was already loose. After looking at it I discovered that the locking barbs had broken off on 1 pin! I've never seen that before, ever!

I never have any problems installing them because I'm smart enough to push down on the spring mount to keep the part against the motherboard flush with it, so I'm really puzzled why it broke. We had one pretty good 5.6 earthquake about 6 weeks ago that lasted about 20 seconds, and I'm wondering if that's what broke the barbs off. I know everyone hates those push pins, but I've never seen one break on it's own! Since I have a drawer full of Intel coolers, I just transplanted one from the E4300 cooler, to the FS7-Pro, and it's back in business. My cores are now back down to more normal temps while encoding and everything is working fine again! Weird!

    Hey bigwill,
Hint! Scroll the bottom part down on the Processor arithmetic so we can see the CPU speed! LOL!! I'm assuming that it's running stock speed at the moment, judging by the MIPS (Dhrystone) and the memory bandwidth.

I have nothing against BioStar MBs. I just did an AMD upgrade with one, and I loved it! The MB you chose is one of the best you can buy in that price range! I think it even holds some overclocking records, if I remember rightly! I see you have the memory running at 1066, and that's good! Do you plan to overclock it?

Whatever you do, good luck with it!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

been playing with this Mushkin mem. this is some good stuff let me tell ya...ddr2 800 (PC6400) stock settings are 4-5-4-11. i have them now running at DDR2 1066 (PC8500) 5-5-5-18 at stock volts 2.1v sure wish i would have gotten these from the jump start of this build..lol

suprising the temps didnt get as high with IBT.guess the paste is doing its job on the lapped coolermaster cooler. thanks buddy ;)

i am truely impressed with this mem. ive done nothing to it other than change the timing to 5-5-5-18. i might have been able to go
5-5-5-12 as the mushkin tech suggested but i didnt wanna push it..lol
i have the straps set at 400mhz with the 2.66d setting

    cincyrob,
What's with the memory bandwidth? I've got less L2 Cache than you, yet my memory bandwidth is much higher. I'm running 5-5-5-15 @533x2=1066MHz! ???
