but if we don't tell people to get ultra/ qtec psus then those companies may go bust in this economic downturn, and we will be held responsible..... I don't want the guilt of having such companies out of the psu game...:(

Yep, Manchester/Toledo for 939/940, then Windsor for AM2, and now Brisbane on 65nm?
Are the only cores for Phenoms the Agena (X4) and Toliman (X3)? (At least until the Phenom II's release)

I'll be honest, I don't give a damn about the Single cores any more, the duals are too cheap for them to be worth it. If you want extra low-power usage, you may as well get the Intel Atom.

When is the Kuma due to appear?

Spam: I do, I'd pay good money to see companies that make bad PSUs go bust.

Sam I was joking loool. The new x2 7750 based o k10 is out, 2.7 clock,95w tdp.... Ouch and it's not as good as a 2.53ghz e7200. At 3ghz it's on par. It'll clock to about 3.30ghz which it less than the e7200 clocks but it is cheap €80.

The E7300 only costs £90 (bear in mind the Euro and pound are pretty much identical now), and uses 50W at load. TDP of 65, but remarkably it uses a full 13-14W less than the E8500/8600. [thetechreport] A shame, I was hoping it'd pull off better results than that, oh well.

Oh, and as far as I can see, it's not out in the UK yet. None of the mainstream or alternate stores stock it yet, it's not bee added to any of the major websites. Heck, it's not for sale at newegg, that should say enough...

Screw the Guilt! These Ultra pieces of crap cost 7 lives! Besides, I'll sleep better at night if I do say something, knowing that it isn't likely someone's home will burn down because of a known flawed PSU. If you depend on the lying bastards that run companies like that, you put your home and family at risk. What good are specs if they're lies? Besides, companies like that just change their name or ownership and continue doing business as usual.

In this particular instance it was a 500w unit that would barely make a 380w sustainable load. We could only hope that companies like that go out of business! LOL!! The PSU in question also had a SLI-Certified sticker on it when it didn't have certification from nVidia. I have no sympathy for companies like that at all!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

    Sam,
The Phenom II is Brisbane Architecture, which is why they are pin and backward compatible with AM2, AM2+ and AM3. It sure looks to me like AMD has had a plan all along, and has been waiting for the right hardware! Their purchase of Ati, made the difference. Without them there would be no 780G chipset, and no fuss made over Phenom II at all! Word has it that the "Good" Phenom IIs with the HKMG Metal Gate low Wattage Transistors may be out as early as late April, Early May. The LN2 boys are going to have a ball with them, as they should hit 7GHz at least, on LN2. Maybe more!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

GM and myself and i think boozer at one time have/had the RC690.it is nice haven all 7 fans going in it but its not needed to cool things.. well maybe you with 2 big gpu's you might, but doubt it.
i have 2 140mm fans on the top of the case and they suck out all the hot air keeps the CPU nice and cool.
now that the paste on the CPU is past the burn in state my load temps don't even get over 55c any more..i know thats nothing to brag about but ask everyone here about my temp issues...lol

TBH i think you got a awesome case. id get another one...well if the HAF932 didn't exsist....lmao

lots of reports of the 940x4 hitting 4.2+ undewaer, wonder how it will compare to a similarly priced q9550 e0 at that clock or i920 at that clock.

Nothing skeptical about it at all. The incorporation of the HKMG Transistors will add about 20% to both the scalability and overclocking abilities, as well as performance, and the Current 45nm Phenom II did hit 6GHz without HKMG technology being used. Intel couldn't even get to 45nm without it! The difference lies in the two chips Architectures. As poor a performer as the Brisbane's were, it seems AMD had the right Architecture to build their Quads with them. A 20% improvement would be about 7.2GHz over the current 45nm Phenom IIs 6.0GHz on LN2.

Then why can't they get anywhere near 4Ghz in normal systems? Phenoms clocked beyond about 3.2-3.4 seem very scarce from what I've seen.

Because they are all 65nm chips. They would clock better if they were 45nm, but my guess is they are waiting for the good Phenom IIs to confirm their expectations, before the mass shift to 45nm for all their other chips. Look at how well the current 45nm Phenom IIs perform and overclock compared to the 65nm chips. It's a night and day difference.

I know you've heard that the chips demonstrated so far were "Cherry Picked", which isn't true at all. They were selected from pre production runs from flats of them by random hand pick. The fact that the performance of all of them was about the same speaks volumes for the future of AMD and the Phenom II.

    Best Regards,
    Russ

Well, only if they're cheap. I was still hoping for more from the new Pheoms really, at least to be able to compete with the top end Yorkfields.

    Sam,
I'm pretty sure it will compete with the Yorkfields and maybe even the lower end i7s. The best thing for AMD is they don't even have to beat the Yorkfields, just be close enough to them in performance for AMD's lower pricing overall, to be an effective persuader.

What I see here is a battle shaping up for the Lion's share of the server market. Core i7, with it's high costs in our presently worsening economy is a dead issue for server consideration, regardless of it's performance. It's just too expensive! That leaves Xeon Yorkfield vs Opteron Shanghai. Socket 771 vs socket F. Shanghai is just waiting in the wings for the new lower wattage HKMG Metal Gate Transistors, which will drop their power consumption 30-40%! I'm pretty sure that the shanghai will get them before the Phenom II does, considering their importance.

Consider also the statements by the CEO of Google. He stated that "it costs more to power and cool them than the servers themselves cost", so power consumption and heat are very much going to be an issue. So far AMD seems to be doing everything right. Intel's had to rethink things a bit, but has enough umph in the Xeons to compete with all the present 45nm Opteron's. All the Xeon Yorkfields are 95w vs the 75w Opteron Shanghais. That's over 25% less power consumption for the AMDs to start with, and that will be reduced even more with HKMG! Overall cost vs performance is going to be the bottom line, and I think AMD might have the edge there! Like I said back at the beginning, they don't have to beat the Yorkfields, they just have to be competitively close!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

the thing is, for regular people, not servers, is it going to be a good deal? If they ate I might start reaearching some good 790gx board withgood ocing abilities :) I'll just need a new retention plate for my swiftech gtz ;)

The benchmarks of the Shanghai opterons were quite significantly far behind the Yorkfield-based Xeons in the article I wrote. I think competing with i7 is very optimistic.

Wow, seven lives lost from fraudulent PSU companies? That kind of moves it out of the joking category to the "kill those bastards" category. I don't blame you guys for taking a hard line on that crap - it seems like people should be going to jail.

You had to go and rain on navs parade - that first case looked like the bomb. "Tacky" you said. Ouch. Don't hold back so much Sam.

So, maybe some exciting news from AMD this summer says Russ? Sam says "optimistic" to think they'll compete - but I would love to see it!

Regarding "regular people" shaff, you really mean enthusiasts like us, especially we hard core COD4 online junkies LOL. But Russ is talking about a much bigger corporate server market that could really boost AMD's business (and stock price lol.) Like I say, Sam is skeptical, but I would LOVE TO SEE IT!

Speaking of love, I noticed that, while greeny was reluctant to quote Shaff's "love u" - I think gm used the word "scary" - Sam didn't have any similar reservations. (Of course the "love u" from shaff was directed at greeny hahahaha!)

What I said might have seemed harsh, but trust me, there's a reason for it, if you've ever seen a case with coloured plastic added to it, you'll know what I mean, it looks crap.

As much as I would love AMD to become competitive again (for a start it would help cut prices on the Intels :) ) they just won't be, this time around, in the performance sector, once again they'll be relegated to the 'bang for the buck' category. Undoubtedly still an importat role, but let's consider the L5430 in those two graphs above. That's a Q9450 with a Xeon badge. That CPU has been out for a while, and is neither king of the hill of Yorkfield (that'd be the Q/QX9650), and that's before we even consider the i7s, whereas the 2384 Opteron represents AMD's best from Shanghai, and look where it sits :S
It's a start, as that score puts it either equal to or better than the Q9300, so AMD are at least competing with the 45nm Quads now, but only just.

I'm sure the biggest server market share goes to IBM as it is? The have he worlds most powerfull CPU :)
