    OM7,
that release is for the Beta. I don't think that the official one will be out until mid year! The article hinted that it may be released sooner if the Beta doesn't give any problems.

Everyone here knows I hate Vista, so my opinion doesn't count! LOL!! I think Vista is "Bloatware Supreme"! So does most of the world, which is why there's a Windows 7 at all! Anything that makes me have to buy double the memory just to run decently fast, isn't worth it to me!
    ZD-Net thinks it's better!

I agree 100%! That would be a terrible feeling of "Rejection"! That's what Micro$oft gets for trying to cram another Bloatware OS down our throats! Window 7 is reported to be much faster than Vista too and doesn't require as much memory to run well! As Sam said, "Good god, the people really have spoken"! Yes they have and we, the end users have won! ROFLMSOAO!!

    --Windows 7 Beta Leaks Early
    Paul Thurrott, @windowsitpro.com
A pre-release version of Windows 7--build 7000, which is widely expected
to be released soon by Microsoft as the Windows 7 Beta--leaked online
late last week. The software giant has officially provided this build
only to its closest partners, but the company is expected to deliver the
Windows 7 Beta to technical beta testers in the days ahead and then to
    the public by mid-January.

I've been using the Windows 7 Beta build since last week and have
written a lengthy review and provided over 50 screenshots of this
eagerly awaited release on the SuperSite for Windows (links below). But
in keeping with Microsoft's new design mantra, little has changed in the
product since Microsoft announced most of Windows 7's features back in
October. The company previously stated that the Windows 7 Beta would be
    "feature complete."

In use, the Windows 7 Beta is very similar to Windows Vista but offers
better performance, enhanced functionality, and a pared-down, simpler
UI. Microsoft has paid particular attention to the Windows UI in this
release, and appears to have tweaked virtually every aspect of the
interface. Compatibility with existing hardware and software is
excellent, as is performance. Stability is mostly excellent, too, though
individual applications--notably Word 2007--freeze up in the Windows 7
Beta far more often than is the case with Vista.

Following the public release of the Windows 7 Beta, Microsoft is
expected to ship a single release candidate (RC) of the system and then
deliver the final version of the product. Based on the quality of the
Beta, my expectation is that Microsoft will finalize Windows 7 in April
2009 and deliver the OS to customers by June 2009 at the latest.

I was just about to post that about the Windows 7 beta! I'll try it out soon and let you guys know how it went. Build 6801 was quite amazing to use on an old computer and I did use it as the Primary OS on my old computer(which gets heavy use daily by my parents) and there weren't any complaints. No optimizing, just a bunch of average people using the OS and they liked it much better than XP.

That may well be, but the 32bit version Blows! I personally have never not had problems with it and I convert a lot of "Vista Only" machines to XP-Pro because most people don't like Vista because it's slow and crashes a lot. It's the main reason for XP-Pro's continued existence, and the upcoming Windows 7! It doesn't help when companies like HP/Compaq and eMachines sell Vista machines with only 256MB of slow memory in them either!

    ddp,
I run XP-Pro SP3 in my old Dell C610 1.4GHz 512MB P3 laptop and it's faster than any Vista laptop I've come across. Vista is a hurry up and wait thing on most laptops I've seen, and a good many desktops as well. Most of the time you are waiting while that little circle thing is spinning madly away!

Vista Certification is another issue as well. 2 1/2 hours to install a new hard drive because it won't authenticate is ridiculous as well. The fact that I have to phone and wait just to install something as simple as a hard drive, only to be chastised for not buying a "Vista Certified" component is also ridiculous, especially since it does work without problems after all of the BS! M$ has become a bunch of control Freaks!

that dell belongs to a customer with pre sp1 vista on it. told her to get at least 1gig of more ram to make it load faster as was slow as molasses. she got the ram & i installed it, runs faster. my compaq amd 1.4ghz with xp pro sp2 & 256meg runs faster then her laptop.

XP SP2 here, Intel Atom 1.6GHz N270 processor with 1GB RAM, lightning fast machine, works perfectly for everything, including torrenting. No extreme cooling or silly graphics cards or Vista here :)
