For the record, it was 5510mhz the Asus achieved.

Not bad. I'm as impressed by the 4.2Ghz with the TRUE, to be honest.

    waittttt, WHAT!?!
    a 25x multiplier???
lol, i officially dont have a clue how the new core i7s work
    how do you overclock?
i thought that since i got the i7 965, i would just raise the multiplier...
whats the difference between the i7 940 and i7 965???

    I believe the 965 is multiplier unlocked, the 920 and 940 aren't.

so then do i even need a high FSB motherboard?

Tbh, any X58 is high end. Up the multi as far as you can go and proceed from there.

now the i7 940 has a "qpi" of QPI: 4.8GT/s
and the i7 965 has a "qpi" of QPI: 6.4GT/s

so lets say you overclock an i7 940 to 3.2ghz, will it perform the same as an i7 965?
or is this "qpi" thing locked?
    what does it do?

    thanks, im1992

The memory multiplier is unlocked on the i7 920 and 940 so you can raise the qpi to 6.4 with just on option in the bios. The qpi is the interconnect for the cores. The only other differences are the locked core multiplier and a thermal feature that stops the 920 and 940 from exceeding 130watts.

so is the i7 965 worth the extra money? will it overclock higher then the i7 920/940?

If you are getting it for $500 That is a great deal and I would go for it. But if you were paying retail it would not be worth it because the 920 can overclock almost as high.

Anyone using XP-Pro 64 bit, beware of the latest version of Service Pack 2. It totally destroyed my win 64 to the point that it wouldn't boot and there was no way for me to be able to do a system restore. makes sense as if you can't get the OS to come up, it's a little bit hard to restore anything!

    im1992,
I didn't, but I don't store anything on the boot drive at all. All my storage is on a different physical HDD! I did all the other upgrades and it was running fine, so when it told me that updates were ready for my computer, I went ahead and did it. It was the last time I saw anything on the screen too, because one it was done and re-booted, that was it. Post screen and then nothing! video was on, but just black! No error message, no nothing! It just never booted XP!

aww crap dude, i am really sorry
i know how much of a pain in the ass reinstalling all the software become
do you use Acronis True Image or something similar to backup all the software in its installed state so that you can just pop in the disc and re-construct the HDD?

    How would an i7 920 @ 3.2Ghz perform vs. an i7 965 @ 3.2Ghz?

Well then...mathmatically, they SHOULD be the same. But Im still pretty green to the more technical side of things. Its also possible, ive overlooked something. :)
