Basically, any PC that has XP with at least one service pack installed can format the drive you want your OS on. Then you install windows on it (Leave file system intact, no changes) and done. I don't see why you need to format two drives, unless you deleted the partition from the both. If that's all you did to wipe the data from the WD drive, you can likely get the data back using a partition restore program.

Acronis DiskDirector is good for this, but I don't know if there's a trial that will do it, as it's payware.

Actually, windows has never given me a problem. I am EXTREMELY careful. With linux, im uncertain what went wrong. Thankfully, my FALS 1TB was unaffected LOL! losing 800gb+ would have upset me beyond belief! Your correct though. In the future, I would rather lose a few minutes unplugging a drive than lose several Gigs LOL! And I would like Linux on a separate machine. And as I said, I dont think this Gigabyte board is supported. Though I have not done too much research into that.

omegeman, if your just trying to learn linux why don't you run it in a vm. That is the easiest and safest way to do it.

Because im sure once I get into it, i'll be hooked. I find a lot of it fascinating. I wanna get into programming, and I believe Linux is a good place to start. So I want it to have its own dedicated machine. Thanks though. The thought of a VM did occur to me. But, why keep all your eggs in one basket? :)

I don't really care for restarting every time I want to try something in linux. Right now I am running virtualbox with a couple copies of debian installed and I am practicing some networking. For me it is more convenient because I only have to use one machine instead of two.

I suppose if I kept a running HDD backup, it wouldn't be like keeping all my eggs in the same basket LOL! And it does look like the VM can teach me some other stuff. :D

Robo...copy the segate 500 to the segate 250 with the Seagate DiscWizardSetup...I have it if you need it you can also use to partition your hard drive this is all you need for the seagate problem...a disc should have came with your drive if it's retail
    [IMG]

Now...I guess a few people use this for there Western Digital drives
    [IMG]

both are installed on my system....Just copy to copy or a fresh install on the 250 remember you have to do update to service pack 2 in order to install your audio drives...aka Realtech...

It will also work on a lot more than just Seagate drives too!

This has got to be one of the most amazing things ive ever seen! QUITE pleased with this :D Guys/Gals, if you haven't experienced VirtualBox, I strongly urge you to do so, if for nothing else but the amazement, and to say you did it! LOL! Nah, really...I see some possibilities, and loop holes with this ability. I will continue to use this little gem. It does however make me regret not buying the 300GB raptor!

    krj15489, BIG thanks :D

I have used the free version from Seagate (look under support), and it will only support Seagate and Maxtor (which Seagate purchased), anything other than that it will not even install. Now, that's just been my experience with the free version.

And if you get it installed with like an external Seagate or Maxtor, and they are not connected at the time of execution it will abort, now again, that has been my experience.

    sytyguy,
Perhaps it depends on the version of the Seagate Disk Wizard, because to date I have used it for Seagate, Maxtor, Hitachi and Western Digital. I don't have access to my HDD at the moment, and the Boot CD gives no information of what the version is. My copy was emailed to me from Seagate a couple of years ago when I had a minor problem with a 160! It's not the same as the free version! The free one will only install the Seagate and Maxtor, as you said. I just wrote myself a note to send you a copy as soon as my computer is up and running again!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

Haha I have a friend who works for a major software contractor in my town. He has like 8 separate OSs running in VMware at once testing program compatibility and performance. He has a Phenom II 940, 8GB of RAM, and a 300GB Raptor to do it with :p

Well, that's is all I was saying, the free version only works if a Seagate or Maxtor drive is present. BTW, the version I use is a paid version, and like yours it works on any drive. So many thanks for the offer.
