I don't really see what need there is to preserve an upgrade path from a mainstream platform to the elite top-end solution. i5 and i7 will be so comparable, there's no need to upgrade to i7 from it. i7 is simply what you buy if you want the top end. I don't really conside the different sockets a problem. You buy an i7 with an i7 board and it just works, no risk of the CPU not being detected due to BIOS problems and s on.
Most gaming builds for $1000+ are going i7 these days. That's a pretty good indication that the technology is worthwhile.
Is P55 seriously only 8x/8x again? I have to say, that is a big blow to i5 for me. The DX11 generation of graphics cards are going to be severely set back by that.
We'll leave the off-topic doomsday theories behind if you don't mind. I appreciate your thought, but the fact that the world is allegedly coming to an end doesn't have much to do with i7.
Rob, Omega: Yes, newegg have taken another batch. There literally were only those drives in stock a few days ago. What is wrong with the people reviewing the LG GH22NS50, or should I say, the single person that's reviewed it 10 times. It's a poor decision on the part of LG to adware their drives, but it's so easy to get past stuff like that...

Haha all this Doomsday talk makes me glad I live in Wisconsin. The weather's already wacky here year round so I'm used to it! lol Not to mention I won't be getting covered with water any time soon. The soil is way too sandy to even have a flood around here.

Wow Newegg is having a tough time with their drives! One company I seriously hope doesn't go under :S

Ouch. Not good for technology that fast. I personally might look into i5 once the tech matures a little. Though I want to see what AMD does with AM3 before I make my decision. They have seriously brought it back in a big way. Hopefully we see some sort of i7-ish behemoth from them.

Just read there'll apparently be a P57 chipset? Interesting development, perhaps that will address the issues. I doubt Core 2's successor will be implemented without full PCIe support.
Wasn't the nforce 200 supposed to cause reliability issues?

P57 sounds like it could be a winner. I bet the Gigabyte boards will be popular as ever :p

Thing is - all the P55 boards have a northbridge. The only P57 boards I've seen so far (all Asus ones) don't have one at all. Why?

Every P55 board I've seen so far has one, or there's a big heatsink covering bare PCB...

I lol'ed. Not every manufacturer but one would put a pointless heatsink on all of their boards. There's clearly a northbridge there.

    Here's something interesting.

No Northbridge here either, but look at the specified PCIe bandwidth.

Is there a possibility that something else is going in the space the MCH once occupied and is being cooled using a heatsink, since there's room for one?

not the sort of heatsink you'd include for looks. The higher end DG80 has nothing there.

This Gigabyte board has nothing in the middle.

    But this one does:

    Sam,
I just now PM'd him. When I went to reply to him, it wouldn't let me reply, but it allowed a new PM. I think something is maybe messed up.

Perhaps you can't PM banned members. I'm chatting to him now via msn, he's none the wiser other than knowing about the poor spelling and text speak. That can be the only reason for the suspension.
