Do you think that if both were at the same clocked speed, they would perform about the same. One things for sure, I've never been able to OC this one more than 3.6! I've read that the 965 will do 3.7 without a volatage nudge. Thats pretty impressive! And it'll do 4.0 on air supposedly.

It won't be faster per clock, but it will indeed OC better. 4GHz is still a stretch though.

Ok. Even if it could hit 4.0, I just don't think its worth it to me. It'd probably only gain me a few minutes in dvd rebuilder :p

Thanks Buddy. I wasn't into a bios flash anyway LOL!

Same MB I picked out for a 600$ build last night XD

Curios to know how well the ATI Radeon HD 4200 works, baring games can it handle everything else such as HD video play back? Also do you guys think a dedicated gpu would be worth it to take the load off the main system? Trying to keep the cost as low as possible but I'm not sure of cutting out the gpu in favor of an integrated one.

The onboard video in my Dell Optiplex 745's can play most video content, the 'highest' i've played are 720p BR Rips (hence why one of the Optiplex's is now my HTPC), they play smoothly. Saying that my Acer netbook can do 480p videos too..

Doesn't sound too promising....but if it doesn't work out they can always go out a get a gpu.

Im currently looking at towers, and am rather disappointed with what im seeing. Half of them don't have cpu ventilation. NOT good. Thats a deal breaker for me. Newegg really needs that filter in search results! I think my MSI barebone tower, really benefits from that particular air duct. Im now looking at some Cooler Masters however that look promising :)

A 965BE? You know you can't overclock them right? The 965BE is likely to go from 3.4 to 3.7, the 940 will go from 3.0 to 3.8-3.9, so your call :p

Omega, I just built a machine for a client with that boards DDR2 twin.
No issues at all, except it cold-started so fast that even with HDD as first 2nd and 3rd boot option it couldnt find the slow to spinup 5yr old 80GB maxtor. after the error "not finding boot device", a quick restart and everything ran fine. I told them they needed a new HDD too but they wanted to keep all usable hardware from their dell while updating the essentials.

Sam, why do you say its a poor overclocker. Surely that can't be said about every last one of them. Perhaps the ones used in tests were not the best bins?

Nope, it's true of every single one of them. The 940-965 are effectively the same chip and thus overclock to the same speeds - the 965's high initial clock means it doesn't really overclock at all. It also has a higher heat output than the other chips due to the higher power required to reach 3.4Ghz.

So, essentially...a person is paying for the "Stock Clock". Wow, thats unfortunate. Eh...I already figured even if it could do better, it just isn't enough to justify upgrading. Not even the DDR3 controller is worth it eh. LOL!

Deadrum: BIOSes wait to detect a drive before passing. If a drive is spinning up, they will wait. If the drive never spins up, they will hang there forever. Thus, it not being detected will be a glitch with the BIOS or the drive.
Maw: 720p is fine on almost all onboard video - 1080p however requires a dedicated card and a decent CPU.

Thanks that's what I needed to know, guess they'll need to buy a cheap gpu.

Ultimately, I don't think the case will be my decision. Woman and all LOL! She'll probably be picky about the way it looks ;)
