    Russ,

Did you check with Task Manager to see what was running at that specific time?

When ever I experience an extreme bottle necking, or lockup, thats always the first thing I do...Gotta love that task manager. Everything runs through the process tree :)

    Hey sytyguy,
It wouldn't let me do anything. It would just pop up a message telling me that it couldn't run because the computer was shutting down. It worked fine when I turned it back on this morning.

    Thanks for the input,
    Russ

    Did you attempt the "3-finger-salute"?

As far as I know Ctrl, Alt, Delete is the only way I know of to get to the task Manager. If there's another way, I'm not aware of it! It just said that it was not able to open the Task Manager because Windows was shutting down!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

Actually, (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) also works :p And in fact, its the less irritating way in windows 7...

Sometimes you just have to resort to the Reset button. Most OSes are resilient to recover anyway.
For many years i've used corporate machine (i still do, 2 of my main machines are Dell's) which obviously don't have reset buttons so sometimes you just have to turn them off. Again, most OSes are resilient enough to cope.
At least in linux you can generally do Ctrl-Alt-<and one of a few different function keys> to escape to the command line ie to get 'underneath' the Windowing system and find out the process id of 'X' ie the Windowing system and manually kill it and it will usually startup again by itself and has usually cleared whatever the errant problem was.

If you right-click on an empty space on the task bar you can then select Task Manager. But, if you can't select it from the task bar, then yes, Ctrl, Alt, Delete (3-finger-salute) is the way to go. Strange that didn't work.

    sytyguy,
You are absolutely right. It's the first time I wasn't able to get in the taskbar except when I was locked out of a few customer's computers! And that was a virus that used your own password to keep you out. Then the only thing visible on the screen was a blue background and the mouse pointer. You could move the mouse, but the buttons didn't work. Neither did the keyboard!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

I've had that happen before. Total lockup. I believe a virus caused it though...
Forgot about the Taskbar right click LOL! On windows 7, I definitely find Ctrl + Shift + Esc the best route. Too many options the other route LOL! When I want task manager, thats what I want ;)

Thanks Oman7, I will remember that! Sometimes the taskbar is the difference between being infected and no problem! Especially with this crap that wants to scan your computer for free, and put malware or viruses in and then charge you $59 to remove them, which doesn't work either! LOL!! Guardian AV is the most Infamous!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't Ctrl+Alt+Esc an SP3 feature?

Knowing me though, i've probably been using that combo for years without being aware of it as it's one of those things you do on auto-pilot, like changing gears in the car etc :)

That's happened to me once or twice before (don't remember how I fixed it or it cured itself). Unless it occurs often it probably isn't anything to worry about; as I've learned over the years OS's sometimes do very strange things and it isn't worth trying to figure them all out.

Nope, I've been using it on SP2 for years.

Hmm strange. Didn't do anything for me in SP2. Ctrl+Shift+Esc switches between open programs in Win7, and Ctrl+Alt+Esc brings them all up and then removes them one by one with each time the combination is pressed.

Just tried Ctrl+Shift+Esc in Win7 too, it still brings up Task Manager.
Haven't tried that other combination as i don't want to stop anything, can't say i've heard of that one anyways
