Networking on win 7 is pretty awful along with printer support. I have no idea what went wrong but win 7 can no longer find my printer even if I give it the ip, yet every other OS including the win 7 RC can.

hmm I waited till it quit with an error about 4 times and tried every other trick I knew of. Eventually just shared the printer on another system which it was able to find to get it working. What I find really odd is that what worked in the RC doesn't work anymore lol.

Mmm, I used my XP PC to host it in the end as it was easier.

First time builder. Need some help on parts. I visit a gaming forum and they put together a build thats suppose to be good. Im in need of a new pc since im using a old compaq 800mhz with 128mb of ram running WIN ME. Im interested in gaming but I don't want the thing to be too loud since I dont have alot of room where imma put it. More than anything I need it for media purposes and school. Well heres the build:
    [Motherboard (MSI 770 DDR3) + Processor (Phenom ii X3 720) Combo]:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/ComboD...t=Combo.272066
    [GPU (Sapphire 5770 1GB DX11 GPU) ]
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16814102858
    [HDD (Samsung F3 500GB)]:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16822152181
    [DVD (Samsung 22X DVDRW)]:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16827151187
    [Case (Gigabyte Luxo X140)]:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16811233058
    [PSU (OCZ 500W Modular 80+)]:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817341016
    [RAM (OCZ 4GB DDR3 1333)]:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227495

Any opinions would be of great help to me. Case is not avaliable either so maybe a recommendation on that too please. Thanks in advance for any help in getting me out the stone age :)

Re Win7 - i can't get my HP Laserjet 4L's working (no drivers), no problem (they're ancient anyway, didn't really expect them to have drivers in this day and age), i just print from linux and XP machines (plus one of my Win7 machines is dual booted with linux anyway).
As to networking, no problems at all over the months under Win7 on two Dell machines. As to loads of other programs working under Win7, see here ~ http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/769480/4661854 - i compiled that list back in May, haven't had a need to update it since

erkow: You haven't copied the URLs properly, so I can't see the prices directly, but overall the build isn't bad for a low-midrange game system. I would ditch the OCZ RAM and PSU for a better brand like Corsair:

The rest is alright. As for a quiet low-end case, probably something like:

    erkrow22,
I'm not trying to ignore your questions, nor is anyone else, but none of the links you provided work. They are either off sale, or somehow your links got messed up, since I have no trouble making my Newegg links work. It would also help if we know if you plan to overclock or not!

That being said, I would like to comment on a few of your choices, as I think they are not the best choice for your money! There are much better cases available for about the same amount of money than those made by Gigabyte, that are more modern in design, and offer much better cooling potential, tool-less drive mounting, all modular plug-in front panel wiring, 5 5.25" bays instead of 4, and sideways mounted hard drive bay for 3 HDDs, which keep the hard drives much cooler than a conventional case with front/rear drive mounting. I also happen to own one, so I have my own experience with it going for me. This is what I have!

I would also recommend a 790/750 chipset over the 770/710. Something like this, without the on-board graphics.
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128378
A far better value for the $30 price difference (after $15 MIR), over the MSI. I have the same motherboard in DDR2. I understand your gaming forum wanting to build as cheap as possible, but the difference is worth way more than $30 in the features it offers. It's a much better value for your dollar, that's easily expandable to the latest Phenom II Quad cores. The biggest plus for you, is no on-board graphics, so you aren't wasting money on something you'll never use. It's got more than enough bells and whistles and the quality is outstanding.

Please give us some working links for the rest of the parts, and we'll see what we can recommend there too!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

Now this is a thing of beauty. Under 2.5Hours and looking LOADS better than it did. Lets just say there were A LOT of red fragmented sectors on this poor drive LOL!

Got my Athlon II x4 Quad this morning. Man it's fast! 46,000+ MIPS and almost 8000 on the memory bandwidth, running at stock speed! WOW! I'm going to leave it set this way for a little while, and then begins the OC! LOL!! CPU temp is 29-30C. Everything is on auto except the memory which is set to EPP control! I'm going to encode a DVD and see how that works with 4 cores!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

    Oman7,
Yes, but not the 2009. I just don't much like the 2009 as it doesn't seem to be relevant to anything. You can only compare to others that have it. Everything is different and that damn flipping the screens around. I wouldn't mind it as much if they would give you a manual mode for the individual screens. I'm going to put it in and see what it does with it. The CPU temp never even got to 40C while encoding. Runs sweet!

    Best Regards,
    Russ

I know you will OC that chip Russ so happy clocking :D

Be sure to post up some results and benchies to compare. I'm curious to see them in action outside of a potentially biased testing site. You have a good 790 board with good RAM, though I think you could use a bump up to a Corsair/Seasonic on the PSU personally.

    Good luck and godspeed!

    *sound of rocket launching*

@Omega, Smart Defrag is actually one of the slowest ones. Try Auslogics as it's way more powerful and has more options for optimizing the drive. If you don't want the complicated interface try Defraggler. Both have proven much faster than Smart Defrag on my systems and I have 2 1TBs and several 500GBs.

So those of you on win7 how's it all working out? Mine went in to a BSOD fit after 6 days of uptime just like the RC so it's been replaced till I can figure out what the cause is. Guessing it might be bad RAM (again) but all of them passed memtest a few months ago, plus and this problem is only present with win7 and the win7 RC which makes me think it's a software failure.
