    - That's how i should have written it really, except i have ~

Modem ->>> Router ->>> Switch ->>> 2 extra routers to extend wifi coverage ->>> PCs/Xboxes etc (though i have PC's off the main router and the switch and the other routers but you get the gist).

It is simple, my point was that even with my 5 devices home networking is technically as simple as Modem ->>> Router ->>> PCs

Then why in the heck call it a router, if I have to hang a router off it? LOL! I'm sure i'm making this more complicated than it needs to be :)
On another note, I'm finally CRT-Less. :D The local donations depot took them with open arms. They were heavy, and taking up too much space. If I had my own house, it would have been a different story of course ;)
So by having a modem -> Router -> switch -> PC's, the computers connected to the switch, will be able to acknowledge the other pc's? Correct? Otherwise whats the point LOL! Why can't a router perform both router, and switch functions simultaneously? Eliminate the need for a switch...

I only skimread the spec of your modem so don't know if it's got a built-in router, was trying to get off the PC and watch Hustle, sorry :p
I'll have a look at the spec again .

It seems there's a few variations of the modem; from your link a post or few back ~

    Actiontec GT701A USB/Ethernet DSL Modem
    Actiontec GT701C DSL Modem
    Actiontec GT701D Ethernet DSL Modem/Router
    Actiontec GT701R USB/Ethernet DSL Modem

And this one ~ http://www.actiontec.com/products/product.php?pid=70 suggests that it has a router built-in - only trouble is i can't tell if your particular model has routing capabilities (the model names above and the link don't really make things any clearer), i'm trying to think of the easiest way to actually check if it's also a router ie in it's setup screens, the thing is that i can't put my finger on the proper terminology ie how to best describe a router (other than 'it routes'!).

Yeah Hustle's great. Come on Shaf you can probably describe a router better than me..

Mmm hmmm. The link you provided shows that two computers can be networked wired. While with a switch, it supports up to 256 pc's. Not sure why it would care how many computers are using the connection. Perhaps it's like Computer bios addressing, and HDD size limitations. I don't understand how my modem can network 2 pc's, when every computer I've ever had, only has a single Ethernet port. Even If I use the USB option for internet, How can it netork, if neither pc's have dual LAN? Perhaps I should simply get a router, and be done with it ;)

The 256 pc's thing is a subnetting limit as far as i remember, the old '0 to 255' thing. It's twenty odd years since i left school, i can't think how to put it into words properly hehe. Just think of the subnet mask ie 255.255.255.0 - i'm sure one of the other guys can describe that better than me, i know what i mean but i'm very rusty.

I don't follow re the dual LAN ports, or is it that your modem has two ethernet ports ?. And all USB ethernet modems i know of allow you to use USB or ethernet but not both at the same time

Acually, it has one usb, and one ethernet. And I HAVE run them simultaneously :p Not suppose to, but it works :)

    This is exactly it here.

    Sam,
Now you have me scratching my head. I don't have a network but All 4 of my Router ports and the Wireless can access the internet without any ISP software, because the IP address is stored in the Router Memory. I would go crazy when I repair computers if it didn't. Even when I didn't have the wireless, and just a 4 port router, it worked the same way. It's basically "Plug and Play". Plug in the Lan connection and open the Browser. That's it! I've also never needed to enable connection sharing, in fact I have it turned off!

    Did I miss something here?

    Russ

Sounds like your router is set to dish out DHCP connections, and as Windows connections are by default (can't think of the technical term) DHCP-aware for want of a better description, everything you plug in, just works.
I just like to control the DHCP range so that i know that specific devices always have the same IP. For instance i sometimes FTP in to the different xboxes, i need to know i'm connecting to the right one, stuff like that.

Any router with multiple LAN ports is both a router and a switch, it's just that the switches in routers are typically 100Meg, which isn't fast for local transfers.
Russ: If you plug 4 PCs into a router that's a network. It's if there is no infrastructure between PCs at all you need to use sharing. Your router will be using DHCP, so IP addresses are signed and corrected automatically.
