russ & sam, if 1/2 of a dual core craps out, would it still run & if still able to run, would it showup up as a dual core or as a single core in windows?

It would still show up with its model number and stepping, though I'm not sure if it would show the second core. I imagine it would work much the same as unlocking the extra core on the Phenom II X3, but in reverse.

It would also depend on what caused one of the cores to fail to begin with. If a core just up an died, I'm sure it would run much like many other CPUs with disabled cores do. If there were more damage than just a faulty core, you might be hard-pressed to even get it to work...

customer's compaq is a dual core 1.6ghz with 4gig ram but showing less then 3.25 gig because vista 32bit. just finished do a system recovery but still as slow as before & not good at all for multitasking as it will almost freeze. seems to me as running as a single core 1.6ghz. the problem seems to happened about a year ago as i'm told.

I'd almost tell you to try using Killdisk and do a complete reformat. AFAIK system recovery only restores missing or damaged windows files. It doesn't clean out junk and clear driver errors. That's more the territory of third party apps like Driver Sweeper Pro and CCleaner.

Ctrl+Alt-Del and on the performance tab it will show all available cores. If the core wasn't working properly, I don't think it would even start up unless there were a way to isolate or lock the core. So if task manager shows the core and that it is being used in any way, I highly doubt the core is faulty.

Also don't forget Vista is a huge system hog and almost any system can be noticeably slugged down by it. Using the 64 bit version with at least 4GB of RAM is the only way to get semi-decent performance. A 1.6GHz dual core would be hard pressed to really push Vista smoothly to begin with, let alone with a couple years worth of small errors and junk files caked on top of that.

In Task Manager how many processes does it show open for all users? These add up quickly and most people don't even notice until the machine is bogged down so badly it doesn't work properly.

    ddp,
I've only seen that happen once with an Intel, a Q8400. It showed as a Q8400, but only had two working cores. It could also show as a dual core, depending on the bios version installed.. With the Q8400, something happened with the connection between the two die's, where only one worked. I imagine that would wreck havoc as far as the L2 cache goes. I don't imagine that happens very often.

    Best Regards,
    Russ

Yeah then I'm stumped. It could simply be a failed core. But that also depends what shows up. Does CPU-Z say 1 core or 2?

don't know as i didn't notice the 2 cpu screens in task manager. i might have to go back either tomorrow or friday if they still have a problem with a hp printer that does not have vista driver. shows up alright but won't print. might give them a call tomorrow to have them do task manager to see if shows 2 cpus or 1. task manger on my xp pro only shows 1 cpu screen but would show 2 if i had vista/win7 on it as i have a dual core 2ghz.

I have XP Pro, and it shows both cores. Select the "Performance" tab at the top of the screen, and it should show 2 graphs.

Well, if you need a 2TB drive to be fast, the F3 is about the only option. I'm still a bit wary of big Samsung drives after the F1 debacle.

    Could B over though SAMMY
Samsung is usually pretty good about fixin their Problems

The revues look really good at newegg, they do only go back as far as 12-24-09. So really that's only 3 1/2 Mons
I Might get Lucky, and Russ will call Samsung, About previous Mishaps with their larger drives. See if they did do something Significantly Different 2 improve their larger Drives
I really think all the large HDDs have had their fair share of problems
I've been real happy with my WD Blacks
So far I've had no problem with the WD Blue

    I think I might give Samsung 2T a try
I really like their 500Gig drives, even over WDs

lol. It's so everyone can see the GOOD deal rick. :) Not just the people in the PC build thread. :) I have a 750 F1 drive and it has been a solid performer... NOT an OS drive but an abused storage drive!! LOL.
