I've spent two days trying to get dual monitors up and running at work in Puppy linux. Linux is great and everything but boy, it's like 1995 again sometimes. Linux has supposed to have come on leaps and bounds since those days.
My new work's windows laptop (Dell i3 330 something or other) has a posh E-Port Plus docking station, which is driving two 22" Dell E2210H monitors (one off DVI and the other is VGA as the two DVI's on the dock can only run cloned images ie you can't run 3 separate monitors off the dock, quite annoying actually, a bit of crap design going on there. But anyways, within a minute or two XP has two monitors running, zero effort, and i use Ultramon to swap things between the two. Effortless to setup and a joy to use.
The dock was running various disparate monitors until the new 22" came, not that WIndows cares.

Linux on the other hand, what a nightmare. My current work's linux box is a Dell C2D E2180 tower, Two 19" monitors (slightly different Dell's), something like 5 different graphics cards and two days/many frustrated hours of manual editing of the xorg.conf file later, have finally got the two screens up and running, can swap things between them. Am running my own trusty old PCIe Geforce 6200 that lived in my Q6600 box for 3 years alongside a PCI Geforce MX400 or 440 (it has dual VGA ports but don't need 3 monitors, plus i've got my own P4 linux laptop on the desk at work as well now). Am pondering putting my spare HD4650 in the E2180, but first i need to find another 19" Dell from around the office so that i have two identical monitors. Just because linux is sooooo picky. Don't even get me started on installing various different linux ISO's as different kernels have differing support for Nvidia cards.

Trouble is that the HD4650 is overkill for work, i will probably stick with the 6200 as i have a DVI adapter on order so that i can drive the two monitors off the one card. I can then leave the linux box up and running permanently, as i take the i3 lappie home every night, it's an E5510, the perfect sized screen and a great keyboard.
(The new Dell laptop came with Win7 but even a manual reinstall wouldn't allow it to join the Windows domain properly, hence why XP is on there, Win7 doesn't buy you anything at work anyways).

So the word of the day is, don't try multiple monitors in linux unless you have identical monitors, or just wimp out and use Windows (or in my case, do both) :p

Like Estuansis said, I would spend a little more, and go with the 5830, or spend even more and go with the 5850. Though they cost a fair penny ;)

I just retested both of my 60mm fans, and an 80mm CM fan. I realized that my initial testing was done on 5V, and had to retest them ;)
The 60mm fans move some serious air on 12V! One is highly obnoxious, while the other is only moderately to loud. They will NOT be going in the case though LOL!
The 80mm fan moves almost as much air as the 60mm fans, and is only 1/4 as audible. I'm guessing if I put it in the case, it WILL effect the northbridge temps, and I MAY be able to hear it, but I doubt it. I'll be running that test here shortly.

First I want to thank everyone for their thoughts and wishes. I do appreciate that. It seems I'm going to be around for a while longer. I had a blocked Artery, that's become unblocked. My Oxygen percentage has jumped from 82% to a more normal 95-97%. I can walk normally and even run, for the first time in years. I have to do some exercising to get some muscles back in shape, but aside from that I've been feeling different and much better for over a week. There's much more to it, but this really isn't the place for it. Suffice to say that I'm going to be around a bit longer than I expected, and I'm grateful for that.

    Warmest Regards to all,
    Russ

Rob, Intel is coming out with a bunch of new stuff starting this fall (supposedly) and almost for sure Q1 2011.

That is one of my biggest complaints about linux lol. None of the "easy" ways to set them up ever work but it's doable sometimes. I don't know much about puppy but with gnome it ended up being as "simple" as installing the right graphics driver and editing/adding a few lines in xorg.conf (with an nvidia gpu, probably different for anything else).

    Good to hear :)

Ha ha! I second that :p

Well shoot! I guess I didn't fully understand russ. Or perhaps I didn't wanna believe that a 60/70mm fan were the only fans that could fit around the northbridge. I took one look, and knew that the 80mm fan wasn't gonna work. I've been fiddling with a powerful 60mm fan for the last half hour. It did not effect the north bridge temps. I hovered it all around the board. I held it around the VRM, the heat pipe below the CPU, and the southbridge. Virtually zero effect on northbridge temps. The 60mm fan I was using pushes more than enough air to effect any temperature. So I'm at a loss...

ddp: I need the excuse, I know I can drink, I was an Alcoholic for 35 years. I just woke up one day and did not have the desire, so looking for a reason just to tip one for U NO WHO
Anyway just joking, Russ and I R pretty close over the net. I'm super glad he's going too be around for a little longer. We were just talking about it the other day, he's under the impression he's going to the better place. Even mentioned saving me a spot, I told I'm not headed that way as their are no Dogs or Sex, I'm going the other way (BABES, BOOZE, and DOGS FOE ME). To hell with all the rest

Russ, any thoughts on why I had zero effect with a monster of a 60mm fan?

Russ, this was your post a while back, submitting a picture of your coolit. I wanted to see it again, and its gone. Any thoughts on that?
Furthermore, are you certain, that your 70mm fan is 15mm depth? Are you sure it isn't 10mm? My 60 x 60 x 10 barely fits between the pump/cooler and the northbridge. I'm really confused here. Another post I saw had you recommending removing the heatsink all together :S

    Oman7,
I sent the 70mm anyway! It's on it's way! Just went to the post office! Unless there's something drastically wrong, it should do the job just fine! Sent USPS! You will see what I mean by it moving serious air, quietly! I even checked it to see if it fit on mine. Just slip it in, frame side down, and unless something is wrong, it should drop those temps. Here's the pic. Don't know what happened to the original on ImageShack!

Thanks Sam. Only thing that bothers me is when the humidity gets high. Then I just stay in my room with the AC on! LOL!!

    Warmest Regards,
    Russ

Thanks russ, your pic came in handy once again ;)

I misunderstood. I installed a 60mm fan in the lower section indicated, where as you installed it between the pump and the mounting knobs. And I see that you did not remove your heatsinks like you recommended earlier. That would make me nervous to say the least ;)
And I say again, the powerful 60mm fan had zero effect on the Northbridge temps. Perhaps removing the blue shield like you did would have an effect?

You're too kind. Let me know if I owe you anything for the fan :)

Today i was at another branch installing some new 23" screens so came back with various smaller monitors, poached a couple identical 17" widescreen Dell monitors and now have my work's linux box spanning the two monitors perfectly at 2560x1024. So all sorted there (had some identical, newer 19" widescreen monitors but they wouldn't play ball with my version of linux, and wasn't prepared to waste more time on it, the machine will only really be used for shell scripting, in addition to database work and php scripting once i've been on a MySQL course in a few months). But will i add another couple monitors to the machine..., doubtful as it's not needed, but who knows

That's great news Russ, hope all stays well with you, am sure it will.

    Oman7,
No Problem my Friend! I removed the heatsink just to renew the Thermal Paste. You have to put it back on! LOL!! I did remove the Blue GigaByte covers. Works much better without them. They are held on by thermal tape. Just put them in a safe place in case you ever need to use the 3 year Warranty. They might just frown on removing them. :)

    warmest Regards,
    Russ
