The LG IPS and Dell Ultrasharps are basically the two brands of monitor I specify people these days. Arguably the Dells are better put together, but the LGs aren't bad - The Dells deliver a uniform, flat, 'workspace' image, whereas the LGs deliver a more vibrant, shiny image, and usually cost a bit less.

He's a Dellboy, ha ha! Frankly, so am I. I'm certainly sold. Love my U2410.

Though I'm sure if LG(or another) were to produce something superior, I'd certainly be interested.

Already got two U2312HMs so a U2412M would fit right alongside :p - If they had been cheaper, it's what I would have bought at the time. £175 vs £220 though, it wasn't really justifiable back then.

Another vote for the Dell here. They do put together a good monitor :)

Funny I thought you said 4K TV's were a waste basically, which is UHD, but now you want a UHD monitor? Kev....

If your tax return can support it I've always been behind UHD (4K) and could use a loan possibly?... :D

You won't go wrong with either Dell Monitors or LG's.

DDP, you're a funny guy LOL!

Steve, I'm not entirely opposed to UHD. For a PC, it's justifiable. For Home movies? I don't know about that. 1080P is a pretty sweet spot in that department. My return should be better next year. Only one job, and I only claim zero all year. But, with Obummer in office, we'll see what happens :S

If I could pick up more simple side jobs, all the better! I just made $100 to hook up a roku for a friend of the family. She's not very tech savvy at all. She was happy to have me do it LOL!

To all that has posted a reply to my LG monitor or Dell monitor.

I have the LG monitor just got it the other day. I got this monitor to run along side my samsung syncmaster 2433BW. now the samsung is 1920 x 1200 Lcd and the LG is a LED IPS 1920 x 1080. I think have became alittle spoiled to the 1920 x 1200. would any of be able to go from the 1920 x 1200 to a 1920 x 1080?

All Canadians are funny - you have to have a sense of humor to not mind freezing your butt off in that ice and snow every year.

    AMEN to that!

    =====================================

Guys, I am having major second thoughts about messing with trying to overclock that i7 940 that I picked up. What are my alternatives?

My 9450 is stable at 3.343ghz, and allows me to pretty much run everything - barely on some titles. Another 20% of headroom would be nice, but I am having serious trouble getting motivated, the more I read about overclocking this chip.

What would be my alternative option if I ditched this plan, and just bought a new rig, meaning new cpu, new crossfire motherboard and new memory. Or can I take my 12 gigs (6x2gb) crucial 1066 ddr3 with me - or is that too slow to be able to get a good overclock on the next cpu (not to mention the current i7 if I decide to try it.)

I am having major second thoughts on fooling around with this i7 940.

The more I look at it, I'm getting the idea that I would spend a lot of time learning to overclock obsolete hardware, which would run very hot, whereas for $500-600 or so I could just move up to a modern cpu.

    What do you guys think?

    Rich

    Perhaps
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116901
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233280
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128591
That's $625 for the actual components.
If you want to try and really push things overclocking it, you should probably add something like http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835608014
That'll run up to about $700.

You should be aware that due to the high temperatures involved Haswell (4000 series) CPUs don't overclock as well as Ivy Bridge CPUs, but the architectural improvements make the overall performance slightly better. Generally speaking results of 4.3Ghz are pretty proven, the 'upper' area, i.e. what is sometimes attainable with advanced cooling runs to about 4.7. I suspect the best you will get long term is 4.4.
At that speed the CPU is roughly equivalent to a 5.3-5.8Ghz i7 940 (depending on the application) or a 6.4-7.0Ghz Q9550 (again, depending on the application).

    Stock, the 4770K is going to be roughly equivalent to a 4.25-4.7Ghz i7 940 or a 5.1-5.6Ghz Q9550.

You have the option of saving $110 by dropping to the i5 4670K, which has a fairly similar performance in more basic tests like games up to last year or so. In advanced games and heavy computing tests like video encoding though, the 4770K is going to be worth the extra.

I can blame Obama for plenty, but true enough that he inherited the messes of several presidents before him. I simply don't like many of his policies and how he treats his position. Won't go any further than that. This is not a forum for politics. It can make enemies out of friends :(

Rich, I think you'll be fine if you use any reasonable i5 or i7. Even a first generation chip will be more than enough for the large majority of stuff. Granted current generation Intel hardware is better in some ways, and faster on top of that. Really down to how much you want to spend. Would personally give that 940 a spin and see what I can get from it.

For either a monitor or TV it is the same effect moving to UHD and is justifiable, both can be used in the same way.

Did she like Roku? One of my TV's is a Hitachi and has the Roku dongle add-on, I've been thinking about getting it.

You can blame Obozo even if the mess started prior to his office, his party was still to blame for most of this mess anyway. He is one of the worst Presidents ever, which is pretty tough to beat after the last 3 Presidents, 4 if you go back to Jimmy Carter. If his lips are moving he is lying.... Isn't if funny that our worst Presidents won Nobel Prizes? Or maybe it isn't knowing were the prize comes from. :D

Movies, I agree with you wholeheartedly. But let's keep the public forum politics-free hmm? PM if you wanna discuss. I'll be happy to join in your disdain for the POTUS :)

Not sufficiently qualified to comment, and neither is the right place to discuss the president, but I would nonetheless say the nobel prize thing was silly. IIRC he hadn't even been president for that long when that one appeared.

Really, 4K is going to be best used for me for uninterrupted desktop real estate, and possibly some games. The only thing that will popularise the technology enough for it to become cheap is it taking off in TV/film. Slowly but surely that's occurring, so whatever your opinions on whether 4K is worth it for video or not, keep them to yourself if you want 4K for anything else! - Remember, 4K monitors have been around for 11 years now, and they were little more expensive back in 2002 than they were in 2012.

DITTO!!!! And the shame of it is it takes a Canadian to point that out to us, I read the rest of the posts lol, I can see there are a lot of republicans here, to bad we can't get into to here, I have plenty republican friends whom I make their heads spin with their petty excuses about Obama and back them in the corner with questions they can't answer or are afraid to and the stuttering starts, as one posted here it's also true you can loose friends quickly, to many times a civil argument turns into a stupid one, anyway good looking out ddp and hope I don't loose any friends here lol.
