I remember saying in May 1999 '13GB will be loads, that'll do fine'. I surpassed the 13TB mark in January 2011 (when upgrading from 12 to 16TB), so 11 1/2 years ish, for a factor of 1000.
Yeah, technology advances, thereby requiring even more storage space. 4k content will certainly take up space. Heck, even blu-ray is a storage pig!
I remember in 1985 saying 5MB drive would be all I'd ever need and the disc, which was removable, was the size of a very large pizza and about 3 inches thick. Of course back then the 1K memory limit was still a factor. ;D
I suspect I'll see the day, when petabyte and more exists. Brontobyte? Probably not LOL! Geopbyte? Probably not even 4 generations from now
If an alien race helps us out! Or, we stumble on some new remarkable storage technology. I suppose flash technology is pretty impressive. I'll have to calculate how large PHYSICALLY, a petabyte drive would be, based on current flash technology.
Roughly 10hrs to "long format". I wasn't around for the completion, but judging by the meter, and how it looked at 8.5 hrs, I'm willing to bet it was between 9 and 10 hrs. I'll begin some large transfers tomorrow. As well as a quick benchmark. Is that some kind of star wars crack, DDP?
I border on hatred, for star wars. But, people feed me all the info at arms length Star trek, I can watch that if I'm dead tired, and not pass out!
I like Star Wars quite a bit, bordering on maniacal fanaticism at times Am very interested in the science behind it and the political back and forth. It has just as much, if not more, basis in reality in comparison to Star Trek. The problem with Star Wars is that it has been overly commercialized to the point of intense market saturation. Most REAL Star Wars fans regret that fact as it's led to some abominations. It's lead to some rather good things as well. The best bits of the series including by far the most fully realized and interesting characters are in the books. I highly recommend ANYONE look into the Heir to the Empire trilogy and the Hand of Thrawn duology which together form a complete saga. Superb quality works of fiction, that flesh out the universe and its struggles and triumphs far better than ANY of the movies. Grand Admiral Thrawn is one of the single most complex, likeable, and respectable villains ever materialized on the pages of a book. You're inwardly rooting for him the whole time even though it's been made clear that morals are not an obstacle for him. He's not a good guy in any capacity, but he detests evil for the sake of evil as well. Genius on the same level of JK Rowling's implementation of Severus Snape(perhaps one of the greatest and best written characters in literary history), or the winding, round-about way in which JRR Tolkien had Gandalf influencing every single person in Middle Earth. About 95% of Star Wars doesn't exist in a television series or feature-length film. It exists in books and games. By the way, a great many of those games are considered all-time, genre-defining classics that are on any top 100 game list. Rogue Squadron/X-Wing, KoTOR, and Jedi Knight II: Dark Forces ring a bell? Each of them completely transformed flight games, RPGs, and FPSs respectively into what we have today. Game mechanics that those titles pioneered are still in wide use today in their original form. Their influence is still direct and profound. Star Wars is a great passion for me, much like computer graphics and firearms. I am a very hard core Star Wars fan. BTW, Went back and played most of the way through the original Baldurs Gate series. A gargantuan project of over a year. Two exceedingly long and complex games plus a long expansion for each. Modded to the gills for maximum graphical quality and function of course The sheer scale, length, and quality of these games really makes me wonder where BioWare wants to take themselves. The first Mass Effect was absolutely superb and one of the best moves they've made in years. Mass Effect 2 and 3, while both being exceptional in their own right, lack the same sheer depth, feeling of freedom, and complexity. BioWare reduced things they should have expanded on and improved... In contrast, Baldurs Gate is so uncompromisingly free, endlessly open/huge, and stunningly deep/complex that even the magnificent magnum opus Mass Effect 1 looks like a joke in comparison. The new Mass Effect has been effectively announced by BioWare casually releasing some development notes and news. Obviously trying to gain some fervor. Their actual quality has never diminished, but their effort towards sheer content, length, and complexity is nowhere near what it used to be. I would love to see all the mechanical improvements from Mass Effect 3(basically ME1s satisfying equipment system with ME2s great shooting) plus their very good grasp of what makes a game look and feel good, end up in making a better game. The only true argument I have with BioWare is their craptastic amount of DLC that affects the story directly, and how they ended Mass Effect 3, and that's really a creative decision, not a matter of quality. Just give us a real BioWare RPG
