1 way to make certain is to pull the board out of the case, isolate it from the case but still able to use the psu to see if possible grounding problem!!

check that the power connectors(both the 20pin & 4 or 6pin connectors) are plugged in the right way. when board outside of case was data cables disconnected. disconnect all power cables to drives to see if board powers up than reconnect 1 drive at a time. can you try another psu??

yes windows will pick up the drive & load it's own driver. can use xp's burning program or use nero or whatever. figure the cost of longhorn about the same as when xp 1st came out

Help needed towards making a gaming pc. I wanna make cheap gamers pc that will be able to play DOOM 3, Far Cry, UT2004. Also should be good or reasonable with movies and heavy downloading. I don't need a HDD nor a DVD Burner. I have these already. I wanna spend about £700- £1000. Thanx in advance.

    Hello

I am planning on building a computer very soon. I have a basic idea, on how to build one, and have an idea of what I will need.

    I have some questions though

I will be purchasing an AMD motherboard, but I was still wondering what kind of processor I will need, and how I will know if it is compatible with with motherboard. I am looking for a processor speed of around 5ghz, or higher.

I also wanted to know, how to tell the difference between an AMD moter board, and an Intel.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    Have a great day

    THank You

doesn't matter on what board you get because if intel changes the cpu dye like they did between northwood & prescott & your board could only take northwood but not prescott tho motherboard was able to go higher in speed than you are SOL.

my previous p4 motherboard was capable of going to 3gig if using a northwood dye cpu. tried same speed prescott cpu as i had with a northwood cpu & motherboard wouldn't post. got a board that was capable of running both prescott & northwood dies cpus. so same can happen with that board you are looking at if intel changes the cpu dye that the board isn't capable of running tho still in the speed range of your board.

    Unstable system...
I recently built the new computer and everything is fine except that when I turn it on, the screen remains blank. If I hit the reset button it starts up fine. When it doesn't start, the computer doesn't beep. I went back into the bios and restored the defaults and that did not work. I had it oc'd to 2.5+ and it did the same thing. Once it started everything was stable and this thing screams. I would just like to not have to start it two or three times to get her going. Any info???

take the motherboard out of the case but still attached to the psu to see if you have a grounding problem

Meaning leave all else as is and remove the 8 screws, hold mobo in hand and press power? Statically grounded of course. What about all the wiring I have neatly tucked away? Also is the psu that came with the case an issue? 20 or 25 amps on the 12+ side. What about the sata hdd and my Optical drives being on the primary ide instead of the secondary since there is no hdd on the primary? The mobo has a lock for the periferals for oc'ing purposes. Any good reason that my old 800 Athlon is doing the same thing since I reconfigured drives and added Win XP? The two systems are hooked up via a KVM switch to one monitor, key board, and mouse.
    Thanks for the input.
