CPU Fan & Heatsink , well in both cases I would replace the fan's for better cooling, compair before buying there complate system with no OS with the same spec's and get a good power suply in all cases, must chases come power suply rated 400 wts but loaded they only put out 192wts so be ware,.

pollution: I reckon that's to do with cool and quiet. That problem really shouldn't happen with those CPUs, and yet despite the numerous unsatisfied customers on that page you gave me, this is the first I've heard of the problem.

 

I've no idea how effective it is, but up until now I haven't heard of any problems with it.
Anyone got any more straws for me to clutch?

my 4200 is running at 38 but i'm only typing

 

My CPU's idling at 64.5C. I'm having my heatsink replaced soon.

 

polution i've had no problems at all with my 4200 are you sure it's not just a cranky windows installtion?

 

Pollution: which games specifically mess up?
pcrepair: which games specifically run OK.

 

Generals Zero hours messes up, its choppy and there is "helicopter blade shadow" in one of the levels.
Microsoft Flight Simulator 2004 also messes up, i have to run the graphics at the very lowest so it runs.

I did start > run > msinfo32
and it showed that i have hardware conflicts. This may be the problem?

OK, it was not the processor messing up the games, it is fine i believe, for some reason when i installed the ULi AGP video controller from the motherboards cd threws its installation it did not work. Maybe that is Giga-byte's problem?
I went to My computer > right click > properties > Device Manager > System Devices > ULi AGP v3.0 controller > right clicked > update driver

then i did install driver from specific location and searched threw the cd that came threw the motherboard and found the ULi driver for windows XP and installed it and now everything works fine. Do not know why though.

I still have the same hardware conflicts as shown in my previous post and do not know how to fix them.

 

Yeah, that's nothing, the stock heatsink once reached 77ºC. I believe that's 3 degrees off the shut down point. I do sometimes wonder how my CPU can run that hot, but I don't question it, just let it get on with its job. It's about the only bit of my PC that does what it's told bar the Graphics card...

The RAM is elixir value RAM, and once you go above 850MB page file things begin to chug, and sometimes it triggers RAM not recognised POST errors (presumably post-fire in october... Still, the Samsung RAM got toasted and leaked everywhere, so I have to give it some credit)
The DVD-ROM drive occasionally chews up discs, and it's also been a victim of star-force (nuff said)
The card reader occasionaly develops a "this device cannot start" issue.
Some of the USB ports occasionally mess up, "not enough bandwidth". One is physically damaged too. One of the bearings in one of the fans is a little dodgy, sounds like a cement mixer some days. The heatsink quite obviously isn't doing a great job either.

This is depressing!

I had CPU temps of 150+F when using speed fan, but then i download the latest everest ultimate edition here

and my CPU temps where actually only 29C (84F).
With the new zalman heat sink below i know my temp under load never reaches 100F, I do not remember it hitting 90F at full load. The stock heat sink may have been sufficient. I also used artic cleaner and artics silver 5 with the aftermarket heat sink.

 

If only I'd been so lucky. That £25 PSU cost me a grand total of £210 plus whatever you'd price 205GB of data.

The freezer64 looks like a really good heatsink, and I'm toting it for a future purchase. Use Arctic Silver though not Arctic Alumina (what I have). I think that may be partly to blame for my obscene temperatures. See the 65C CPU wouldnt be so bad until you realise the case temperature is 29C. Then you realise just how damned ineffective the setup is.

Annoyingly there's a mod (about 35KB!!!) for UT 2004 I had on that disk which has now been removed from the internet, which I really liked. The bulk of the data I can get back, but it's just the little things.....

That sucks about your PSU costing you all that money. That is the reason i upgraded to the 3800+ X2. I had a AMD 2400+ with a 300W PSU and when it was OC'd to 2.31GHZ it ran fine, but then i brought it up to 2.4 and the power supply failed. I messed up the processor when i was working on it . I was suprised to find that the 2400+ was above 100 dollars last christmas. They are under 100 now with faster buss speeds.

I read after i messed up my old CPU that the PSU is very important when overclocking. Unfortunately I read that after I learned the hard way.

Artic silver 5 does wonders and the artic cleaner cleans the old processor very well.
