that would be a great montior . so you want a widescreen montior right? because that one is

a seperate soundcard is always better although the on board sound with that mobo would work fine. if you want a good sound card go with "Audigy" thats what iam running.

the NEC drive will work fine. and YES this system would run any game out there very well!!!!

OC(ing) is fine as long as you know what your doing the AMD 3800x2 OCs well also.

and cooling device just depends on your case and fan setup.its not JUST for OC(ing). if you want to do it right go with a Zalman 9500 cooler for you CPU best out there and it not all that much money 59.00 dollars i think

for 1000.00 to 1700.00 you can have yourself a kickass setup!!!

Alright, so I'll probably go ahead and get sound card and cooling fan then. Are you sure that the processor is going down in price that much? I guess if it does go down I'll get that. Alright, only things left are speakers (I should be able to handle that) a case, and I'm not sure what I should about a modem. Also, should I just get a simple CD drive to use a master, and then make my other the slave like I have now?

yeah get an CD/DVD-ROM drive to go along with your NEC burner. running two drives saves wear and tear using your burner for everthing. they only run about 20 dollars

iam sure about the AMD price drop happening 7/25/06

a modem should be inculded with your setup if your doing cable or dsl

good cases to look at are Antec or ATX

aabbccdd, thanks very much for your help. I'll be ordering probably as soon as that price drop happens. Hopefully all the parts I need are on newegg.

OK. I’m planning a whole new computer. It’s designed to be fairly cheep and to be used for general stuff (like posting on AfterDawn) but not Games. It needs to be compact as it will be in a bedroom. Remember I live in the UK so all the links the prices will be in £. Here are the specs so far:

    Athlon 64 3200+ CPU (S939)
    http://www.savastore.com/productinf...avastore&product_id=10282297&pid=207&rstrat=0

    Gigabyte GA-K8N51GMF-9 Motherboard
    http://www.savastore.com/productinfo/product.aspx?catalog_name=Savastore&product_id=10285594&pid=44

    2x 1GB PC3200 DDR RAM
    http://www.savastore.com/productinf...store&product_id=10279994&pid=207&rstrat=3115

    Aspire X-QPack Case
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Silver-Window...9QQihZ013QQcategoryZ80168QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

    Maxtor 250GB SATA Hard Drive
    http://www.savastore.com/productinf...store&product_id=10285323&pid=207&rstrat=3099

That’s just the main spec of the system but I will add Optical drives, maybe a graphics card later and a better HSF than stock (Looking at the Zalman Low-Profile one). It will use the supplied PSU as it doesn’t look that bad.

    seems ok to me
why change the heatsink and fan ?
if you're not playing games you won't need to clock it so the stock hsf you get with it will be great
maxtor harddrives run hot very hot i got four in my case and a fan just for them, so thats something to think about :)
    good luck :)

About the AMD price drop, does this mean that as soon as I get my processor a new and better one will come out?

A couple of things, the documentation I got with my new AMD processor said that if you don't use their heat sink and fan, their warranty if void. Be careful if you "upgrade".

Also, as I was spec-ing out my new system, it was pointed out to me that if you buy a dual core processor, you should be running either XP Media or XP Professional, because XP Home does not recognize the dual processor. This a little beyond me, but that's what I understood - and I've got to say that my new system is significantly faster than any other system that I have seen.

That'll happen no matter what you do, what you buy or when you buy it. It's a lovely fact of life when it comes to building PCs.

According to AMD XP Home will run dual core processors just fine,

the new amd2 isnt going to be much of a gain .iam sure the next generation (amd3) is going to be the one to watch.

mmay256 ,you posted false info. there .xp home runs the amd dual-cores fine ,there was a windows update to fix that problem many months ago. so you dont need pro or media center to run dual-core guys

Good point about the HSF. It's there to make things a bit quiter. Also, what Hard Drives do you reccomend if Maxtors run hot as in a small case I will need something that runs cooler.

    From the Manufacturer
The new 300 GB WD Caviar SE drives are perfect for desktop and enterprise storage applications where high performance and reliability are vital. The 300 GB WD Caviar is suitable for the most data-intensive environments. One drive can hold just under 100 hours of high-resolution digital video, thousands of high-resolution images, and has plenty of space for the latest programs and games.
    Features

Cool-running--Cool drive operating temperatures help increase long-term drive reliability. WD achieves the lowest operating temperature of any hard drive in its class.
Fast--WD, the first to introduce an 8 MB buffer, has advanced the caching algorithms of this new and improved WD Caviar SE hard drive, resulting in performance that matches the speed of most 16 MB cache drives.
Data Protection--Data LifeGuard automatically detects, isolates and repairs problem areas that may develop over the extended use of the hard drive.
Quiet--WD minimizes WD Caviar noise to levels virtually below the threshold of human hearing.
Easy to install--Data Lifeguard Tools software makes hard drive installation, management, and diagnostics simple and worry-free.

I think I will go WD then. Only a few £'s more than the equivalent Maxtor model. Suppose its better then running a higher risk of frying everything.
