Shoot! That is NOT what I wanted to hear, haha. Putting that beast of a fan on the CPU is the hardest part. It doesn't fit into the mobo very easily. It was a big pain and always a shady operation when you're jamming things into a mobo. Good thing they're durable.

Is it really a good idea to take it off the CPU? I get uneasy about removing that too, and then adding more thermal compound and everything. I'd hate to risk damaging something.

Weird that the manuals were misleading with their setup pictures. Maybe it was a different case with a different layout though...not sure.

The manual just showed a picture that looked like my setup. The fan was facing the GPU and PCI slots. It was a bad picture and pretty vague though. I'll have to look again.

I'm not sure my old AC cooler came with a manual at all.

Here is the manual for the Sonata II case...

    http://www.antec.com/pdf/manuals/SonataII_En.pdf#search="front usb sonata II connect"

It says there's an intel standard 10-pin connector. I think taht's what I plugged into the USB jacks at the bottom of my mobo - look for grey cable coming from the front of my case in the picture I posted previously. Didn't seem to respond though. That cable going to the bottom left of my case is the one with all those different individual connectors attached. I have the main standard Intel 10-pin connector, but not the extra prong things. Not sure where those would go.

    anyone have any idea? Thanks!

dougisjc, leave the cpu fan heatsink alone for now. the multi-pin connectors is the audio cable according to bottom of page 5 of manual.

ddp....are you saying the one solid blue 10-pin connector is the audio cable? So then the individual wire prong-type connectors are for the USB? I'm still confused on the front side USB issue...but i'll play with it tonight and see if I can follow the link that Crowy posted regarding that issue as well. Apparently front USBs can be a tricky thing...so i'm not the only dummy out there! haha

In all honesty, that card is an antique. Time to find something better. Quake 3 as creaky said wouldn't be a problem, as I've played that on 64MB integrated graphics flawlessly. Not sure whether WoW is so leniant. A lot of games now stress an absolute minimum of Geforce 3 or more...

quite right, some of my machines can only use certain cards and i never go bleeding edge with PC's, far too much big money with massive depreciation for my liking. It's one reason why i gave up keeping up with the popular PC games, it just became too expensive. They're good cards, you just have to know their limits. I bought another MX400 a few days ago just so that i could drive my new 19" widescreen TFT at 1440x900, finding it played Quake 3 Arena nicely was a bonus :)

e.g. i could (fairly cheaply) buy a PC that is faster than my fastest PC (Athlon 2800XP) for burning DVD's but i thought what the hell, and bought a cheap P3 dual CPU m/board to run a couple P3 866's for yet another linux box instead (burner PC is more that fast enough for me). No reason, just happen to have a huge Supermicro SC-750A case sat there for a few years (that cost me £186 new, back in the day), might put my spare MX400 in there; again no reason, it's just a spare card that might as well get used instead of being sold for peanuts or gathering (more) dust.

PS wow looks like the admins have coded the functionality so that when you edit a post you're taken back to that post instead of first page of thread - yay

Oh fantastic, that always used to bug me! Yeah, I'm amazed you can still buy MX400s, where are you finding them? They must be amazingly cheap! In fact, I wouldn't mind picking one up to pass the minimum spec of Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 on my Grandad's machine. It's tiny 145W (proprietary) PSU means any modern card would probably be too much...

just on eBay, they're dirt cheap. i even went as far as a Geforce GTS Pro or whatever it's called but it was faulty so just plumped for another MX400. Deciphering forums such as this and google just to work out what graphics card to get takes too long for me so i just buy what i need for the job in hand, can't keep up with all the new PC stuff

I don't blame you. I may be ahead now, but I won't be for long, I'm not rich like lots of aD users seem to be!

Well, I am soon to change OS from XP to XP media Center... I have always went for cooling temp before sound- now I need to change! I have 6 fans in my case... and yes it sounds like a rocket taking off, SO my question is after I pick a PCU fan [Thinking on going w/ the Arctic freezer 64 pro] what fans should I use? I use stock 80mm in the rear and I am not sure what is on the top and side, but they are weak and load.- Any suggestion on a case would be much loved... Having so many fans ? does this make for noise disorder?

i used to have 14 fans in my SC-750A case, and all that was in there was a Voodoo 3500 and a P3 600E overclocked to a P3 800 or something; that case was like a jet engine passing by :)
When i reuse that case next week there'll be a helluva lot less fans this time around.
Now i'm sat listening to the almost-stock fan on my Athlon 2800XP and that's way more loudness than i'd like to put up with.

Methinks the other guys would be better placed to discuss fans :p

i dont think you want to do that unless determined to hook up your XBOX.
IMO media center is more of a pain and harder to keep stable than regular XP.
There are many sites dedicated to what you can and cannot use with MCE and there is a very specific order of driver installation and audio/video codecs to make it all work. If you decide to go ahead with it, dont be afraid to post back or PM me for any help.

Not tryen to hook up any gaming... just thought it would be cool to watch tv and DVD w/ a remote from my bed instead of my 27 in out of date and ready for the bone yard tv... the fonts are large and I can get a remote that is point and aim., and the cerser will follow where ever i point on the media center?
