I understand that with a 100mbps LAN, I can only get about 20 mbps out of it. But what if I had a 1gbps LAN, would i get 200mbps as a max speed?

Omitting other factors like the read and write speed of a hard drive.

no i dont think any isp can reach high enough speeds

but in theory if your computer/isp could support it then yes

whats the DTR (data rate) of a Ethernet cable (RJ-49) anyone?
    I seem to have forgotten

    Ethernet- 10mbps
    Fast Ethernet-100mbps
    Gigabit Ethernet-1000mbps

If your talking about regular home service, then 100mbps LAN is more than enough. Your ISP plan is for 20mbps (I'm assuming), so you will only get 20mbps throughput out of a max 100mbps.

Doesn't he mean when transferring files through his LAN? That's the impression I had.
