A 7800GTX? Hmm, nice efficiency there I don't think, The 7800GTX is to me an Intel Smithfield where an 7900 is an AMD X2. They're fast, but they use gargantuan amounts of power considering. Probably quite expensive too, I'd prefer an X1800 over a 7800 really...

How much would I use? For now, 2GB, when Vista comes out 4GB, and eventually 8GB in maybe 2008.

Above 2gb is pointless for current applications.

Above is pointless, but not equal. When we move to a 64-bit OS though (so Vista, I challenge anyone to even think about x64) we'll need double for the same programs, so 4GB, and soon after 8GB, when apps start needing more than 2GB in xp (so over 4 in Vista)

Nice build. I wouldn't mind having one of those. With maybe the exception of the case, graphics card, and PSU. AMD hasn't dropped the prices on those opterons much. If I was building now, I'd probably go with a high end X2 for cost. The binning is good and you get more performance for the money. Just take a look at the 4800 and 5000 prices now. (Really, I'd like to try one of the Intel Core 2 Duos though.)
I hate to pop the bubble, but with the new Core 2 Duo processors the high end AMDs are becoming old news when talking about high end performance. From the 6600 up the Core 2 Duos beat everything that AMD has. A lot of custom builders look at AMD as their baby, but old blue just dropped a bomb on them.

I agree on 2GB for a well loaded system with XP. It's not a necessity, but it gives the system some breathing room. Usually I'm bumping 1GB when I have several things going at once. 1GB will keep a big system out of trouble. When I upgraded I changed too many things at once to say increased RAM alone helped. 2 GB has been suggested for the new Vista. More won't hurt. Testing will tell. I suspect most people with the 2GB won't get into trouble. Not everyone tries to multitask to the extreme.

Yeah I'd agree with pretty much all of that! The X2s are better value for money at the low end, but at £250 and above, Conroes are where the performance is at. Considering however, that barring the FX series, that's where AMDs stop (£220), they're pretty much pay-more-to-get-more anyway!

Even though I have an extremely good PC already, I’m finding it hard to put off the next upgrade.

    I already have the following:
CMStacker830 in silver with fans fitted
    7900 GTX - Plextor PX-716A - Liteon 16P9S
    Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty FPS & GigaWorks S750 Spkrs
    2xWD Raptor 150GB Raid 0 4x Seagate 160GB Raid 5
    Dell 2407 Monitor

So I'll only need the Mobo-E6600 CPU and memory and I will sell my:
    A8N32SLi Board
    FX60 CPU
    2GB Corsair 3500LL Memory
    to help pay for those.

All the parts in < > are what I will either be keeping or getting in reality, the items first listed are only what the system would be if I was building the ultimate system with no cost restraints.
So to upgrade will only be about £700 minus what I get for the parts I'm selling, which should get me about £500 leaving £200 approx to find.

That card you have is what I have been toying with getting, as I wish I'd held on rather than getting the 7900GTX that I have.
Its all depended on what I think I can get for the 7900GTX on eBay.
I'm also waiting to hear when the G80 core is supposed to be available.

The CPU has finally turned up, worth waiting for as it is a stepping 6, which along with the stepping 5 chips are the best Conroe overclockers.

    Ordered the following:
Asus P5W DH Deluxe Mobo, decided not to wait for the Asus P5N32-SLi Premium, as the overclocking potential on the Intel 975 chipset is better, and the P5N32 is not using a full nforce 590 chipset on both the North and South bridge.
First job will be to strip down the chipset coolers and upgrade the thermal paste.

GeIL 2GB (2x1GB) PC6400 800MHz Ultra Low Latency GX22GB6400UDC, which is shown to overclock to 1150+MHz.

Orders should be here by the 13th, so will be up and running by next weekend.

LOL hmmm I bet that will overclock well, my system can only manage a paltry 10%! I would normally hazard against a 7950GX2, but since money is no object for BigDK, why not!

I'm sticking with the 7900GTX, no GPU upgrade at present!
The original post was only a wish list, not a shopping list.
