One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor Trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the Trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of its backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of Trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. I would make my decision based on whether or not I used it for sensitive information and do I have the means to Reformat/Reinstall and How much am I going to loose by doing this?

We can clean it if you decide to. That would be the easiest way to go and you wouldn’t loose anything. I have never had any problems from a machine that I have cleaned but, that’s up to you. I simply can’t make that decision for you……..

That said, All advice given by anyone volunteering here, is taken at own risk.
While best efforts are made to assist in removing infections safely, unexpected stuff can happen.

OK, the decision I will make for you is this: Get someone to help you that knows more about computers than you do.. A parent, a friend, an older brother or sister. In order to clean it, I would be issuing instructions that must be carried out without mistakes or you can Bork your computer completely.

I am sorry but I really don’t have the time to give you Basic Computer Literacy Classes…

Find someone that can help you and then post back to this forum. Someone here will help them..

Ok iTokee,

If we can find it, then it shouldn’t be too hard to remove.
We may have to run several programs so let’s start with this:

Download SDFix and save it to your Desktop.

Double click SDFix.exe and it will extract the files to the drive that contains the Windows Directory, typically C:\SDFix

Please then reboot your computer in Safe Mode by doing the following :
• Restart your computer
• After hearing your computer beep once during startup, but before the Windows icon appears, tap the F8 key continually;
• Instead of Windows loading as normal, the Advanced Options Menu should appear;
• Select the first option, to run Windows in Safe Mode, then press Enter.
• Choose your usual account.
• Open the extracted SDFix folder and double click RunThis.bat to start the script.
• Type Y to begin the cleanup process.
• It will remove any Trojan Services and Registry Entries that it finds then prompt you to press any key to Reboot.
• Press any Key and it will restart the PC.
• When the PC restarts the Fixtool will run again and complete the removal process then display Finished, press any key to end the script and load your desktop icons.
• Once the desktop icons load the SDFix report will open on screen and also save into the SDFix folder as Report.txt
(Report.txt will also be copied to Clipboard ready for posting back on the forum).
• Finally paste the contents of the Report.txt back on the forum with a new Hijack This log

That was easier that I thought it would be. SDFix got that stupid Trojan and you shouldn’t have any problems now.

Right click on your Desktop and select Properties
Click the Desktop Tab
In the box select the background you want to use then click Apply


Congratulations, your log looks CLEAN


There are a few things you must do once you are completely clean:

1. Time for some housekeeping

Please download the OTMoveIt2 by OldTimer

• Save it to your desktop.
• Run the tool by clicking on the icon.
• Click the Cleanup button.

• The tools that we used as well as this one will be removed from your system.



2. Please download ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only

Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.

• Under Main "Select Files to Delete" choose: Select All.
• Click the Empty Selected button.

• If you use Firefox browser click Firefox at the top and choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

• If you use Opera browser click Opera at the top and choose: Select All
• Click the Empty Selected button.
If you would like to keep your saved passwords, please click No at the prompt.

• Click Exit on the Main menu to close the program.

Note: On Vista, "Windows Temp" is disabled. To empty "Windows Temp" ATF-Cleaner must be "Run as an Administrator".



3. Your Java is out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malware can use to infect your system. A malicious site could render Java content under older, vulnerable versions of Sun's software if the user has not removed them. Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
• Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) 6 Update 7 and save it to your desktop.
• Scroll down to where it says The Java SE Runtime Environment (JRE) allows end-users to run Java applications..
• Click the Download button to the right.
• Select Windows on platform combobox and check the box that says:
Accept License Agreement. Click continue.
• The page will refresh.
• Click on the link to download Windows Offline Installation with or without Multi-language and save to your desktop. Do not install yet!
• Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
• Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs and remove all older versions of Java.
• Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
• Click the Remove or Change/Remove button.
• Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
• Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
• Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u7-windows-i586-p.exe to install the newest version.



4. Now Set a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since System Restore is a protected directory, your tools can not access it to delete these bad files which sometimes can reinfect your system. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:

• Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".

• Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

• Then go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
• Click "OK".
• Click the "More Options" Tab.
• Click "Clean Up" in the System Restore section to remove all previous restore points except the newly created one.



5. Defragment your Hard Drive

1.Open My Computer.
2.Right-click the local disk volume that you want to defragment, and then click Properties.
3.On the Tools tab, click Defragment Now.
4.Click Defragment.




And here are some tips to reduce the potential for spyware infection in the future:


It is critical that you use a firewall to protect your computer from hackers. We don't recommend the firewall that comes built in to Windows. It doesn't block everything that may try to get in, and the entire firewall is written to the registry. As various kinds of malware hack the Registry in order to disable the Windows firewall, it's far preferable to install one of the excellent third party solutions. Two good ones are are Comodo Free and Online Armor Personal Firewall
I have recently changed my firewall to Comodo, love it and highly recommend it..

Make sure you keep your Windows OS current by visiting Windows update
regularly to download and install any critical updates and service packs. With out these you are leaving the backdoor open.

I strongly recommend installing the following applications:

• Spywareblaster <= SpywareBlaster will prevent spyware from being installed.


Go to these sites and read about these you may decide to use them, I do, because they work.

• Spyad <= IE/Spyad places over 4000 websites and domains in the IE Restricted list which will severely impair attempts to infect your system. It basically prevents any downloads (Malware, Cookies etc) from the sites listed, although you will still be able to connect to the sites.

• MVPS Hosts file <= The MVPS Hosts file replaces your current HOSTS file with one containing well know Malware sites etc. Basically, this prevents your computer from connecting to those sites by redirecting them to 127.0.0.1 which is your local computer

I've agreed with everything so far that you said that I can comprehend, except the issue with System Restore. If his pc is indeed back to running correctly, why didn't you get him to just dump all the previous restore points by not enabling monitoring for the dump and then re-enabling monitoring and then creating a new restore point sequence.And it gets the nasties off hiding there. I don't think he would ever take the chance of going back past today. If this is bad advice, why?

Actually, it’s just 6 in one hand and half a dozen in the other.. Either way works just fine.
On my part, it’s just being over cautious like wearing suspenders with a belt because you can’t trust your pants. Lol

By setting a fresh restore point and then deleting the old ones without ever turning the monitoring off you don’t take the chance of your computer going down in the process of dumping and leaving you without a good restore point to fall back on.. Sometimes paranoia is just “good thinking”. Lol

There are times you must go back further than just one day. Say you are reading a fix on the internet and it tells you to use RegEdit and make some changes.. You have No idea what you’re doing and Bork your computer. At this point “Any old port in a storm” Even an infected restore point is better than none. My first rule of recovery: Never disable the System Restore. It’s not the best thing M$ ever did but it beats the other options. : )

Well Duh! If I had just read the next two sentences in your post about system restore, I would have never posted the last one. I learned today that you can dump the system restore points another way. I thought the only way was to disable it. As far as looking over your shoulder, the shadow you're casting hides me completely. I'm following this thread and learning as I go. You already talked me into upgrading my Java which I have done.LOL I will have no problem seeking you out should I have a major issue I can't solve-it won't have to be too major either!! thanks for letting me pick your brain.
