Glad to hear you're going AMD... For a minute there I thought we had a mission. My X2, being only a 3800+, is still AMAZING. I play games, (CIV 4, ES3, AOE3, and Ill be getting ES4 today), I also do alot of multitasking, and my processor has never actually been at full load. I can't make it. System tests, opening 4 different programs while AOE is running, nothing can do it, but I guess that's a good thing.
Yea, my cpu can't handle me anymore. I am a out of control multitasker. Encoding a Raw mini dv to a dvd mpeg, unraring a 5.0 gb file, burning a dvd in neo, Downloading from a bittorrent, while playing half life 2... with a few other progs running like explorer. I know, I am mean to my cpu...
It should.. I don't exactly remember who persuaded me to look into the X2's, it might have even been you sammoris, but thank you so much whoever did, I was also very excited to hear that the new AM2 platform will support the current X2's and FX 60/62's... That gets me excited. I had to build this computer now, I wanted to wait till june, but I couldn't. Now it seems that I might have just made a few wise decisions... Although I really like my MOBO, and I'll have to get a new one with the AM2. I know of course ASUS will bring some good boards to the AM2 platform, but it sure would be neat to have one like my a8n-e.
Compatible? I doubt they'll go in, it's a completely different socket isn't it? If AM2 does support 939 chips I'm even more interested.
from wiki But I just realized my X2 is a manchester core. I guess maybe there will be new X2's for the socket AM2. Well that kinda puts a kink in my chain. But lets see... All i'd need is new RAM, MOBO, CPU... So if the X2's are the same price on the AM2 platform(I doubt it, but that's marketing for you) that run me about... $481 for a x2 4400+ $303 for dual 1G kingston pc6400 $??? Around 100-120?? $900... Geeze, that's how much I spent on my computer now. And that's with the current x2 4400+ price... I think I might let AM2 sit in the market for a while..
Installing world of warcraft, and I got up to 51% cpu usage. Averaging around 20-22, but I'm also surfing the net, and using trillian. And geeze 5 cd's to install?? Haven't they heard of dvd's??
Lol, good, I'm not going mad just yet. I'm a little sceptical about how much better DDR2 will make things with the X2s, because I've noticed lots of DDR2 have very high latencies, often as high as 5-5-5-12 and this is expensive memory. At half the speed, and half the latency, I shouldn't think you'd trail too far behind.
I've heard it's only going to be a slight boost (around 5%, maybe 10% later when they can't get those terrible latencies lowered).
When they can, surely? I'd prefer 400mhz CAS2 to 1000mhz CAS5 - you notice that an operation takes exactly the same amount of time to complete for both of those - 5ns. Plus of course 2GB of CAS2 PC3200 is a lot less than CAS5 PC8000, about half the cost in fact.
