XP doesn't show some devices even with "Show Hidden Files" enabled. To view 100% of the devices in Device Manager you have to add a System Environment Variable:DevMgr_Show_NonPresent_Devices
and set it's value = 1. Once applied, you can see all your non-active ports.

But as said just because you cannot see it doent mean its not working and I only recommend changes to the OS variables if you are quite au fait with your pc.

We are getting into the realms of a pc OS problem here and they are usually sorted in other sections of this forum. But as it is also Starview related we can keep it here I suppose.

You need to do as I said above, here is the best way I can explain the process:

1.Go to Start, right-click My Computer, and select Properties.
2.In the System Properties dialog box, select the Advanced tab and click the Environment Variables button.
3.In the Environment Variables dialog box, locate the System Variables panel and click New.
4.In the New System Variable dialog box, type DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES in the Variable Name text box and type 1 in the Variable Value text box.
    5.Click OK twice.
6.To view the non-present devices, go to Start, right-click My Computer, and select Manage.
7.Click Device Manager, pull down the View menu, and select Show Hidden Devices.

This is adding the variable you require.

it's not like that. it's parts on the motherboard that need drvers like the processor etc. not the actual board. that just functions and if it didn't the pc wouldn't. also under gt rom the ports wouldn't show up if there was no driver for the rs232.

He is only using the null modem cable and not a USB adapter conjunction the fault lies in the Comm settings if the correct cable is been used. But not in just a standard XP setting regards advanced port settings.

@ Kev have you added the variable I have asked you too?
