if were to copy the GC max drive disc you would need an original max drive disc or a mod chip to boot it, so it would be pointless.... i think

My friends GC gave me "Media not recognized" everytime for all 3 burned copies, which I never got on my cube. I'm still unsure if it's my laser or not, my friend has a Drive 06 (as told by GCoS), and I have a Drive 08. I will try it on another friend's gamecube.

I doesnt seam to matter which version of the drive you have as some people with drive 08 (such as myself) have not problem while others cant get games to boot at all. Wonder why that is?

I have 08 drive and am using Ritek G04 media. I get about a 50% success rate with burns.

Ive been following this thread for awhile (lots of good info), but I decided to go the chip route.

Can someone please read my thread here and see if you have any ideas what could be my issue with DREs? Im hoping someone had a similiar problem before.

I don't want to sound like I'm a newb or anything but maybe it could be the media discs that's giving you the problem?

I tried used Maxell mini DVD+R [made in Taiwan] and it did not work successfully [but not through memory card method, I've done it through PSO]. It could be my Gamecube but who knows.

Try using better media [such as "Made in Japan" types]?

Media quality and burn speed can have a huge impact on the final result.

Taiyo Yuden and Verbatim DataLifePlus are just as good if not better than Riteks. I've used all three extensively ;)

What make/model burner do you have? What firmware version is it using?

Nice burner. The firmware is one revision behind but if you're not having problems there's no reason to update. If you're interested there's a cool utility for Lite On drives called K-Probe that allows you to check burn quality, set booktype and tweak settings,

According to Lite On's website the GSBC firmware matches more media and from past experience new firmwares usually improve write methods for exisiting media as well so it certainly couldn't hurt to update yours. Just be sure to follow the instructions exactly and shut down all apps that you can. Flashing the firmware isn't hard but if the flash gets interrupted you'll end up with a dead drive.

Just for kicks you might try using DVD Decrypter to burn your ISOs. It's a proven top performer and very stable.

The only other recommendation I have would be to install K-Probe and use it to guage the quality of your burns when using different media, apps, settings. It's a great tool to have and know :)

You can't back up your own games using max drive pro unless you have a broadband adaptor and a version of Phantasy Star Online v.2, in which case, you wouldn't need the max drive pro anyways.

Another way to back up your own original games is to buy the Viper Extreme chip, which includes as USB output to ur computer, and u can back them up like that.

The best way, I find, is to not rip your own games, as this can be a very difficult and sensitive process. You can find copies to download, these are guaranteed to work and much easier to use.

You can backup your games using Max Drive Pro w/o Phantasy Star.

If you have a broadband adapter and a crossover/networking cable just hook your pc up to the gamecube, then under the GCOS menu go to Advanced (or additional, cant remember) options, then select Backup game. Insert the game you want to backup, hit A, then it'll give you an IP address to type in to access the ISO.

Is that proven effective Bezerker? Have you or someone else done it? I haven't heard of this before although I have seen the option you're talking about.
