ok. so I need to have vista, and xp. I have two harddrives and switching them at will is no problem if need be. Will it work if i install vista on one and xp on the other but use them both on the same computer. also if it will work, can i have them both plugged in at the same time and select the drive i want to boot from at startup, or will i have to maualy switch the drives before turning on my computer. thanks for your help this is important to me

I think it can be done using the program vistabootpro, but if you got it working right now even though its complicated to switch between them it might be best to leave it that way.
But if you decide to try to modify anything make sure you have good hard drive imaging software to backup your operating systems before you work on them.

But usually the best way to do it is to install vista on a second partition on the hard drive that already has xp installed and just use the vista bootloader to switch between the 2 operating system that's how I had my hard drive setup and it work pretty good.

Go to google and search "dual boot os" That will give you many guides on dual booting different os's with one or two harddrives.
    Its not to hard.
