Ubuntu good or not

Gentoo is a fine distro, a bit more like BSD than linux, but good nonetheless.
You could also try Mepis or Slax.

True, Ubantu isn't perfect, but it's better than Windoze in the security dept. And noobs do need to crawl before they walk. I back up my hard drive regularly. And I am crawling, like any good noob, just as fast as I can away from Windoze.
