Did you do a system update also or just the firmware?

I'm not aware of how to tell the difference between a system update and a firmware update. There is only one file available from liteon and it was the one I used.

And yes, with the hacked 0101 FW 3 hour mode is enabled and works fine.

Upon further investigation, I have learned that the firmware statement is not correct ... Sorry.

Here is a link to an interesting thread of another forum that is discussing the difference between the 5005 and the 5005x

Thanks rjbeeb, but we already knew about that one, it looks like it only gets you the 3hr mode, but still allows mv.

It appears that the 5005x is an ilo04 so it would stand to reason that a hack for the ilo04 would rid you of that ugly Macrovision ...

I'm not completely sure this is the case yet, it sounds a little fishy to me.

sorry about that... first I saw and thought it might help.

I ran the ILOHacker tool on it and the tool reported success with changing region, MV and 3 hour play. It installed on the box just fine and also recorded a commercial VHS just fine during a test. Any way to check to be sure?

    thanks for any help.

okay, so tried another test with a DVD playing from another player. When I pushed RECORD, I got a message at the top of the screen saying Protected Content.

So... confirming that MV did not get removed.

I downloaded the updated firmware for the 5005x and followed Mr. Wizard's instructions for his hack program, and it enabled the 3-hr. mode and made it region free, but it did NOT affect the Macrovision. WAAAH! Anyone figured out yet how to eliminate the Macrovision?

Trade it in on a 5005 no X! Just kidding. So far I've been happy with my 5005x, the only issue is when it's turned off and I switch my receiver to dvd it makes a crackling noise, like static. Other than that it's been great.
