Backing up PC games is very different than PS2.

You'll need to get software able to do this such a BlindWrite, Alcohol 120% or CloneCD. There are trial versions of all three.

You'll also need a burner capable of the writing the protections correctly. Here's a link to give you an idea of what type of burner you need:

I'd suggest checking out some of the stickies at the top of this forum to get an idea of what is entailed in backing up PC games :)

OK, no good. Backed it up using a DVD disc and alchol 120 and it doesn't want to play. I have backed up 'blackhawk down' using the same meathod and it works fine. Any ideas guys please.

Is Blackhawk Down the movie or a game?

PC game protections are very very different than that used on DVD videos. The CSS used on DVDs is an encryption that is standard protection for all DVDs and hasn't changed for quite some time. Once the encryption is removed the disc can be burned with any standard burning app with any standard DVD burner.

PC game protections on the other hand come in several different flavors such as SafeDisc, SecuRom, Tages and StarForce. They all work differently and are constantly tweaked, improved and generally made harder to copy with each new revision. Reading the image of a PC game can be accomplished in a fairly wide variety of burners and ROMs but in order to successfully write the image back to disc you need what's known as a "2-sheep" burner which is one that can write EFM correctly. Correct writing of EFM is essential to making a working copy.

The first step to backing up a PC game is to identify what protection you're dealing with. A-Ray Scanner is the best there is and can be found here:

    http://www.aray-software.com/

I believe UT2004 uses SecuRom though the exact version escapes me. I'd recommend BlindWrite over A120 especially for SecuRom games.

Now to the most important question of all: What brand/type burner do you have?

It was the blackhawk game, and works perfectly even on line, I am using a Liteon LDW 451S which doesn't show as a 2 sheep burner but as I said it backed up black hawk and also C+C generals.

I use colony xxl to find out what kind of protection ut2004 had and it said SecuRom, I burned it at X2 and onto a DVD-R disc.

Hope this helps a little more.

    Rob

    do I back it up onto a DVD-R or a CD-ROM?

The Lite-On 4x series of burners are supposed to be 2-sheepers. If the game is the DVD version then you need to back it up to DVD. I'd definitely use a rewritable as this may take a few tries.

I'd suggest installing the trial version of BlindWrite 5 then get BW5 Tweaker in order to give you more control over the process. Here's a link to BW5 Tweaker, it's the same site as A-Ray Scanner so go ahead and pick that up as well since Clony is no longer being updated:

    http://www.aray-software.com/

When you open Tweaker you should start at the General Settings tab. Try these settings:

None of the boxes in the top left should be checked.
    Max read 1X
Write Speed DVD 1X (try .5X if 1X doesn't work).
    Everything else Default

    Topology Tab:
Everything default except the extraction speed should be 8X (4X if 8X doesn't work).

    Sweet!

I haven't had the opportunity to test a DVD title yet so I guess I lived vicariously through you :p

Great advice neph :) Remember that VSO Software (Blindwrite 5) is by far the king for SecuROM cd or dvd backups, Alcohol 120% for Safedisc.
Neph, did you ever get a working backup of Doom 3 with your Plex Premium? If BW 4.5.7 and Alcohol 120% failed you, you should give CloneCD & FireBurner a try. Just remember when reading the image of Doom 3(CD 1) with CloneCD, that you create .cue sheet

Actually I did back up Doom 3 with BW 4.57/Plex Premium using the settings you suggested,

    Read settings:
    1) Authorize the use of alternative method
    2) Choose nibble and read at 8x
    ======================================================
    Write settings
    1) NO AWS, NO autoplay enabled, burn DAO pw at 4x

It cranked out an outstanding copy that verifies damn near as quick as the original from my 166S. The A120 copy takes a few (nervous) seconds to verify.

I'm going to try the same steps/software but with my PX-708A to see what happens :)

Did you use your Litey or Plex Premium as "reader"? CloneCD 5.0 or 4.3.3.1 "should" make a backup as well.
it's good to hear the Plex Premium still the elite burner for pc game protection backups.

D'oh! Left that part out - I used the Premium to read :) It's the finest burner I've had the pleasure to use.
