I have a HP desktop computer that I bought about 3 years ago and had some questions about upgrading the CPU. First would I be able to purchase a new CPU and install it even though I didn't build the computer myself? If yes, I know I have a LGA775 socket so could I install any Intel chip that will fit in a LGA775 socket?

I have an Intel 520 Prescott now and was looking to upgrade to a Core 2 Duo..possibly the E4400

    Thanks for the help

You could put another 775 CPU in but you would need to check your motherboard manuals which may not tell you.Better off find out what motherboard you have and check on the manufactures website to find out if it supports dual core. Some motherboards you are able to update the bios to get the motherboard to support dual core and some motherboards around three years old will simply not support and you would require a new motherboard as well as the CPU.
